BURN UP CALORIES
Staff Photo By Jimmie Morrt*
HAND-OFF—Quarterback Glenn Ray Thornton (41) of
Groveton is shown handing the ball off to fullback Joey
Winters against Grand Saline Friday night at Lufkin.
There is a fairly popular
myth that some foods, such
as boiled eggs or grapefruit,
"burn up calories." While
digestion of food does con
sume some energy, there is
no particular kind of food
that costs so much energy to
digest that eating it favors
weight loss. (Some individuals
do seem to burn up more
energy when they eat pure
protein, but it is impossible to
live on pure protein, and
many people don't show the
effect anyway.)
On the other hand, you can
pick your foods to get the
maximum nutritional value-
vitamins, minerals, and other
essential substances-for the
minimum number of calories.
Vegetables, whole grain
products, and fruits are par
ticularly desirable in this
regard. However, you should
beware of fad diets that rely
on only one or two foods,
they are usually lacking in
balanced nutrition. In this
regard, it would be prudent to
have your physician approve
any new diet, or design one
especially for you. We have
over 30 diets on hand, and
will prescribe the one that is
suited to you.
WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING
NEW PATIENTS.
In the interest of better
health from the office of
Dr. Mike Shukan
