LIVINGSTON - Officials at the
Burke Center, the mental health and
mental retardation authority for
Deep East Texas recently consoli-
dated two of its outpatient mental
health programs.
According to George Patterson,
director of operations, effective
Sept. 2, the Tyler County Mental
Healthcare Center merged with the
Polk County Mental Healthcare
Center located in Livingston.
"We believe this merger will al-
low us to improve the efficiency
and quality of our services," he said.
"Residents from Tyler County will
now have access to a broader range
of services through the Polk
County Mental Healthcare Center.
For example, in Polk County we
offer a day program for people with
severe and persistent mental illness.
This program provides individuals
with skills training and various so-
cialization activities."
Tyler County residents will also
have access to more physician and
case management services as well
as a child and adolescent program.
Approximately 60 people from
Tyler County currently receive
mental health services through the
Burke Center. These individuals, as
well as anyone from Tyler County
who presents for services in the fu-
ture, will receive assistance through
the Polk County Mental Health
Care Center.
In addition to merging the Tyler
and Polk County mental health
programs, Patterson said the Burke
Center is also realigning how ser-
vices are provided.
"Our primary focus will be pro-
viding those 'core' services that in-
dividuals with severe and persistent
mental illness need in order to live
independently in the community,"
he said. "For example, we will
primarily provide screening and as-
sessment, case management, medi-
cation and nursing services.
However, we will continue to pro-
vide other services such as commu-
nity support on a limited basis."
Community support services in-
clude problem solving and skills
training in an individual or group
setting.
"Our goal is to provide the high-
est quality of care possible to the
residents of Polk and Tyler coun-
ties," said Patterson. "To accom-
plish this we will continue to look
for new ways to improve the over-
all quality and efficiency of ser-
vices."
