Taylor Ducks Win 4th
In State 440 Relay
The Taylor Ducks closed
their I860 track season Friday
night in Austin as they finished
fourth in the 440 yard relay. The
sprint combination of Jan Mohel,
Jimmy Davis, I. N. Davis and
Budgie Ford came in behind
Bowie, Nocona and Stamford as
the Jackrabbits set a new AA re-
cord of 42.2 seconds. This was
only two tenths of a second off
the national record at the time
out it was set but Andrews rewrote
the record books minutes later

as they finished a brilliant 41.5.
The Ducks were timed unoffic-
ially in 43.8, which equalled their
winning time at regional. Only
senior Jimmy Davis will be lost
to the group for next year. The
only other Duck entry, Budgie
Ford, finished out of the money
in the 220 yard dash. The event
was won by Jerry Miller of Bowie
in the excellent time of 21.2 se-
conds.
Bowie was the team champion
in class AA with 57 points follow-
ed by defending champion Whar-
ton with 44 and Liberty with 38.
Andrews won the AAA crown as
expected by tallying 79 points to
runner-up Brownwood and Bay
City with 45 each.
Thorndale’s Bobby Evans pulled
himself out of a slump in the
discus to win that Class A event
with a toss of 152 feet 8V2 inches.
Evans is expected to win the shot

'Venetian Way'
Derby Winner
LOUISVILLE, Ky. USD — Vene-
tian Way wrested the lead from
the front-running Bally Ache com-
ing off the final turn at chilly
Churchill Downs Saturday and
went on to victory in the $158,950
Kentucky Derby as the favored
Tompion struggled hime fourth.
It was a ease of perseverance
for Venetian Way, his happy own-
er, his jubilant trainer and jockey
Bill Hartack.'
Last September at Chicago, Ve-
netian Way beat Bally Ache a
half-length in the $100,000 Wash-
ington Park Futurity. But this
season in three meetings Bally
Ache had finished in front of Ve-
netian Way from the Sunny Blue
Farm of Isaac Blumberg, Chicago
machinery manufacturer.
One was the $100,000 Florida
Derby at Gulfstream Park in ear-
ly April but Bally Ache prevailed
by a nose.
This time, Venetian Way, Chest-
nut son of Royal Coinage-Firefly
by Papa Redbird, was well placed
throughout.
Rosters Announced
Junior League to Hold
1st Meetings Tuesday
Roster of Taylor’s Junior
League for 1960 was announced
Saturday.
First meetings are scheduled
for Tuesday at 5 p.m., the Dod-
gers meeting at Northside School,
the Giants west of the High
School, the White Sox north of
the football field, and the Indians
at 12th Street School.
Members of the Dodgers spon
sored by the Williamson County
Equipment Co. are Stephen Kuhn,
Larry Stautfer, Clifford Taylor,
Terry Czimsky, Bobby McCrary,
put event for the third consecu
tive year but had not been count
ed on to take the discus crown.
Georgetown’s mile relay ran a
good 3:30.1 race and finished fifth
in the race won by Seminole in a
time of 3:25.8.
Belton’s Richard Inman turned
the tables on his chief tormenter,
Danny Roberts and set a new
overall state record in the shot
put with a prodigious heave of
32 feet 8V2 inches. Roberts of
Cleveland and the defending
champion, also surpassed., the
sixty foot mark with a toss of 60
feet 6 inches. Later in the even-
ing, Robert Young of Brownwood
gave Inman’s infant record some
tense moments as he won the
class AAA shot put with a throw
of 62 feet 3 inches. Young had
absolutely no competition as he
beat his nearest competitor by
better than 11 feet. Inman, Ro-
berts and Young are the only
Texans to go over the sixty foot
mark. The national schoolboy re-
cord is held by Dallas Long of
a Phoenix Arizona High School, a
monumental 69 feet 5 inches. In-
man won the discus throw also
to account for all twenty of Bel-
ton’s points.
Although the fabled Andrews
Mustangs drew most of the at-
tention, class A A had other top
notch performances. Bowie’s Jer-
ry Miller took home three gold
medals as he won both the 100
and 220 and anchored the sprint
relay. Wharton’s Walter Hay-
hurst won the broad jump and
high hurdles and finished second
in the low hurdles. Mercedes
Billy Pemelton won the pole vault
with a record leap and won the
low hurdles. Perhaps the busiest
athlete was John Collins of Li-
berty ,the boy who dealt the
Ducks so much trouble at Bren-
ham. He took second in the 440
second in the high jump and
fourth in the high hurdles and
