Violence Awareness Month \
Abuse of women by male part-
ners is so prevalent that an estimated
one quarter of U.S. women will
rx^Qfiencc some form of abuse from
a cUHfent or former partner at some
point, in their life. More women
aged 15 to 44 are injured by domes-
tic abuse than by rape, muggings and
cai accidents combined.
Fortunately, resources exist to
helptwomen get advice or break free
of their abuser's destructive control.
A safe place to start seeking help is
in the privacy of your doctor's office.
He or she can listen and may be able
to treat any physical conditions or
refer you to community services for
assistance.
By definition, abuse is any con-
trolling behavior that forces another
person to do what the abuser wants -
without regard to that person's rights,
body, health or happiness. Abusive
behavior toward a woman can include
pushing; hitting; throwing objects;
forcing sexual intercourse; making
verbal threats; depriving the woman
of money, food, or transportation;
isolating her from family and
friends; or limiting her reproductive
and contraceptive choices.
Abused women can suffer every-
thing from bruises, black eyes, and
broken bones to hearing loss, chronic
headaches, digestive and gynecologi-
referred to as 'dni'gless doctors.
They deal with wetness and relief
from conditions which are the re-
sult of stress whether from mental,
nutritional, environmental or
physical factors.
Over the last two decades, how-
ever, interest in Naturopathy has
once again increased. That is
partly because many people now
realize that drugs are not the

physical ailments and are more like-
ly to be involved in abusive or violent
relationships as adults
Men yho abuse come from all
income levels and races. Many
abuse alcohol and drugs or have wit-
nessed violence in their childhood
home. They may be excessively
jealous of their partner's relation-
ships. or blame their partner for pro-
voking their violent acts.
Some women may feel bound to
abusive relationships by complex
emotional and financial factors.
These can include feelings of low
self-esteem, fear of retaliation, fear
of being alone, money worries, or
concern that their children need a
father. Abused women may believe
they.deserve the abuse or can avoid
it by not angering their partner.
Breaking the cycle often starts
by talking to someone -J such as a
friend, relative, doctor, clergy mem-
ber or social worker. Women can
also call the 24-hour, toll-free,
Domestic Violence Hotline at (800)
799-SAFE (7233), for information
about abuse, community services
including safe shelters, and legal
and law enforcement assistance.

remember that you are not alone,
and that you never deserve abuse.

medical professionals told bias
that 100% of men would develop
prostate cancer if they lived loaf

could alter body functions, Eifo
Gardiner asked his family, "Should
I go tllrough with this?"
He decided to find out more be-
fore he answered. He found that a
live blood test can tell if you are
going to get cancer in the next few
years. With changes, you may
avoid cancer altogether. He found
that most medical practitioners
treat the symptoms rather than the
cause. One branch, Naturopathy,
treats the problem non-invasively.
Until then, he had never heard of
this branch of medicine.
Naturopathic doctors perform
lifestyle analysis, laboratory test-
ing, nutritional and dietary assess-
ments, metabolic analysis and
other evaluative procedures. They
