grandson of Annie Esther Brown
and Jonny E. Hollis recently won
the top award, a $500 savings

cation.
Matthew, a junior at Mt. Pleas-

titled his piece simply, “Unity.”
The theme for this year’s contest
was “Actions I Can Take to Make
My School One Community.”
Schools throughout the tri-state
area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey
and Delaware participated in the
contest. There were five prize
winners including two ninth and
tenth graders from Pennsylvania
and Delaware, and three eleventh
and twelfth graders from New Jer-
sey and Delaware. Approximately
130 entries were ev aluated for the
final prizes.
The keynote speaker for the Con-
vocation was motivational speaker,
Les Brown who shared his story of
overcoming obstacles with a stand-
ing - room only crowd of about
1400 at the Dupont Playhouse.
Matthew and his parents, John and
Juanita Munn, were inspired by
Mr. Brown’s highly energized

“Exercise and ap-
petite”
Will exercise stimulate or de-
crease your appetite? That is an
important consideration when ex-
ercise is being used to help lose
weight. Certain general truths are
known. Individuals who engage in
high levels of exercise on a regular
basis do consume many more calo-
ries than sedentary individuals.
Men who engage in heavy physical
labor, such as logging, may con-
sume 5,000 calories a day and not
gain weight. Clearly their appetite
increased calorics used as a person
begins an exercise program?
To answer this question, a study
was done on the calorie intake on 10
men and 10 women. They were
normal weight, young people who
were within 10% of their ideal
bodyweight These were all indi-
viduals who did not engage in a reg-
ular exercise program. The exercise
for the men used an average of 5%
calories a day more than during
their usual daily activity But they
increased their calorie ihtake only
an average of 208 calories. That
meant they were losing 388 calories
more than they consumed each day.
The exercise for the women re-
quired an average of 382 calories,
but they did not increase their calo-
ric intake. In both young healthy
men and women, exercise did mean
they were losing more calories than
they were consuming.
This study demonstrates the ef-
fects of exercise in healthy young
people. However, in both cases the
net result was losing calories. In
those who do not want to lose
weight, this is an important consid-
eration. They need to be aware that
at relatively high levels of exercise,
their appetite, and hence calorie in-
take, may not keep up with their in-
creased calorie needs. The study
has significant limitations, as it
does not answer what happens to
people who are overweight and
want to use exercise to help shed
pounds. Nor does it answer what
happens on a long - term exercise
program. Perhaps its most impor-
tant application is for those, such as
runners, who do need to know that
their appetite may not be adequately
stimulated to compensate for their
calorie demands.
