Keene resident Nick Chesney was appointed
to the City Council in November 2006, ran for
re-election in 2007 but was defeated, accepted
an appointment to the city’s planning and zon-
ing commission in August 2008 and, on month
later, became chair of the commission.
During that time, he has traveled on sepa-
rate trips to Georgia, Alaska, Greece and, two
months ago, to Africa.
Otherwise, his life story would be pretty
dull. Or would it?
The oldest of four brothers, Chesney grew
up in Strawberry Plains, Tenn., about 12 miles
east of Knoxville, where one of his high school
classmates was Dolly Parton.
And yes, country music fans, he is related
to country music singer Kenny Chesney.
Nick graduated from high school and was
working for a Chevrolet dealer in Knoxville
when, on his 19th birthday, he was drafted in
the Army and sent to Vietnam.
Assigned to be a front-line combat medic
with the Special Forces, he made 11 parachute
jumps in 10 days. One day on patrol, his 22-

varado take a break from playing dominoes at

each Saturday from 4:30-8:30 p.m.
Nineteen of his buddies were killed and only
three survived.
Injured, Nick was sent to Korea to complete
his overseas tour. While in the military, he was
able to enroll in college-level accounting courses.
He returned to Knoxville and the Chevro-
let dealership for 14 years. In 1979, Nick en-
tered the insurance business with ING, using
his accounting skills for the next 18 years as
an agent and in management.
Nick and his wife, Jerita, were married in
1982 in Tennessee, and had a second ceremo-
ny on the campus of Southwestern Adventist
University. They will celebrate 29 years to-
gether in May.
Jerita is an R.N. in outpatient surgery at
Huguley Memorial Medical Center.
Nick, now retired, is a volunteer office
staffer at the Keene Chamber of Commerce
in addition to his work with the planning and
zoning commission, which has been busy re-
viewing and updating the language in Keene’s
code of ordinances.
Chesney likes to travel, work on comput-
ers and photography. His photos have ap-
peared in Sports Illustrated and National
Geographic magazines and the Keene Star.
