In a press release, Sprint
Wireless said that several thousand
of their customers, including some
in this area, have yet to have their
phones reprogrammed with a new
area code, which could cause their
service to be interrupted and their
seven-digit phone number possibly
to be reassigned. The press release
said the date interruptions could
begin was Monday, September 8.
On April 5, two new area
codes, 432 and 325, were introduced
in West Texas and callers have been
permitted to dial either the 915 area
code or the new area code. On Oc-
tober 5, it will become mandatory to
use the new area codes and all wire-
less phones must be reprogrammed
with their new area code.
Because of its concen-
trated population, the El Paso area
is retaining the 915 area code, while
the new 432 area code covers the
central section of the region and
includes, in addition to Seminole,
Andrews, Midland and Odessa.
The new 325 area code, encompass-
ing the eastern section, includes
Abilene and San Angelo.
