Klondike News
_By John dr Elizabeth Hopkins_
Winter just seems to keep hanging on.
But just when it seems darkest, I see
another sign of Spring. Last week I
saw a bunch of daffodils in bloom and
they looked very cheerful. Now, our
plum tree is budded out and ready to
bloom. I can hardly wait!
Wanda Johnson attended a wedding
shower honoring Alicia Ramos and
Jordan Young on Sunday afternoon.
The event was held at The Church
at Klondike. Guests were treated to
a Mexican dinner before the couple
opened their gifts.
Phillip and Allie Stone took advantage
of the sunny days last week and went
for a drive on a couple of days. Visitors
to their home this week included Glen
and Louise Stone and Sharon Jordan.
Louise was back on Sunday for their
family Bible study time.
Patricia Blundell visited with her
daughter Tina in Kensing on Thursday.
Billy Martin accompanied her. While
there, Patricia got some good fresh eggs.
(Yum!) Patricia also heard from all her
children this week.
Mable Wheat has a “small world” report.
She had an email forwarded to her from
a boy who grew up in Delta County who
met a woman in Singapore. The woman
and her husband visited Cooper in 2008
and came into the drugstore shivering
from the cold. Mable promptly made
them both a cup of hot chocolate to help
warm them up. They told the young man
they lived in Australia and wondered if
he could get Mable’s address so they
could write her! I think that qualifies as
a “small world” happening!
Wanda Helms and her family celebrated
Lisa’s birthday on Sunday with their
family lunch. Wanda also attended a
wedding shower for Nash and Leah
on Saturday afternoon at their church.
Wanda said they got so many nice
things.
On Saturday February 20, Earl and
Maggie Thomas and Randy Harrison
were at Tim and Em’s home to celebrate
the first birthday of the Thomas’ great-
grandson Harrison. Em’s mother was
there from North Carolina and had been
there for a week visiting and getting
reacquainted with her grandson. Maggie
and Earl enjoyed visiting with her again.
The party was well attended with kids
and parents from 2 weeks to 83 years
old. (Sounds like a good crowd.)
Everyone should have a good friend
from church who, on a snowy day, calls
to say “Em making enchiladas and rice
and bringing some for your supper.”
Maggie said, “Great, bring it on and stay
and eat with us.” So they did - the food
and fellowship was great!
Ruth Ennis played an early April Fool’s
Day joke on Maggie this week. Ruth
called about 8 am on Thursday morning
and Maggie could tell Ruth was hurting
from her rheumatoid arthritis. Ruth
asked if Maggie was going to Commerce
that day. Maggie said she hadn’t planned
but what did Ruth need? It wouldn’t be
any trouble since Maggie always has
something she needs from Wal-Mart.
Ruth said she had a list and Maggie
said she’d be there to get it. Ruth met
Maggie at the door, arms laden with four
loaves of warm homemade wheat bread
and two loaves of banana bread and said
with a grin, “Here’s my list!” Many
times Ruth cooks her bread for friends
and family to work through the pain of
her arthritis and the bread tastes all the
sweeter because of the struggle. (God is
good all the time).

services for Mrs. Katheryn “Kat” Helm
of Finley, Oklahoma, February 20. They
were Roy Lee and Dolores Jackson,
Annell Oats Patterson, Ted Oats, Rip
and Mary Ann Templeton, and Tommie
Regan.
Once a few years ago when I went to a
homecoming in Finley, OK, one of the
“old timers” there asked me about the
“old timers” still living in Charleston. I
told him there are no “old timers” still
living in Charleston. Now I think about
that question and think, “I am one of the
old timers still living there.”
One day last week I was Roxton and
purchased two of Phillip R. Rutherford’s
books, “Back Home” and “Blowing in
the Wind,” true tales about Petty and
Roxton. They are both very good books.
Most of these tales have appeared in the
“Roxton Progress” Phillip is a retired
English teacher. He and his wife moved
back to Roxton after he retired. I also
purchased a cookbook “Friends Cooking
for Brad.” This book is a fund-raiser for
Brad Hatanville. You can obtain these
books at the stores in Roxton.
We had a nice crowd at the Methodist
Sunday, with several visitors. Sheila
Trapp and some friends were there from
Mt. Vernon. Our candle lighters were
Brazos Phillips and William Watson.
They were also ushers as were Journi
Ingram and her little cousin, the little
Ashley girl. One of the James boys was
an usher also. Linda and Kenny Bakers’
two little granddaughters were there.
They got to spend the long weekend in
Charleston. Kendra Ingram taught the
children’s Sunday school, and Jennie
Pickering had the children’s Church.
Sammy Long helped Gary by reading the
scriptures and leading the Responsive
Reading. Jacie Phillips sang “I’ll Fly
Away.”
Ashley and Dusty Preas are moving back
into their newly remodeled home after it
was almost destroyed by a fire.
Have a good week!
