Cooper Review - Page 4
Charleston News
By Vicki Vasco
We are still having spring
weather in the East End. The
birds are singing, and the
spring flowers are blooming.
I hear the children around
us singing and laughing this
afternoon. They are out of
school for Spring Break. The
grass is green. What a lovely
time of the year! Don and the
other farmers are plowing,
getting ready for spring
planting.
A large group of Lamar/
Delta Retired Teachers met
at the Chisum Administration
Building Tuesday for an
appreciation luncheon. That
was Public School Week. The
Chisum Elementary School
Choir sang for us. They sang,
“Texas, Our Texas” and “God
Bless Texas.” They also sang
“Happy Birthday” to one of
the retired teachers who were
having a birthday that day.
They were wonderful.
I attended the Retired
Teachers’ Book Project
Monday. We are getting
ready to go to the elementary
schools in Lamar and Delta
Counties to read to the pre-
kindergarten classes and
to present each student
with a book to take home.
I will take my group to the
Chisum Elementary School
Wednesday, April 6. Pat
Waters will take her group to
the Cooper Elementary School
and Mr. James Deatherage
will take his group to the
Roxton Elementary School.
Other groups will be going to
other schools, as well.
Wednesday, we had Ash
Wednesday at the Methodist
Church. Several attended.
Our candle lighters Sunday
were Brazos Phillips and
Billy Watson. Brazos was
an usher also, as were Will
Pickering and Jake Murray.
Lynne Long was the Worship
Leader, and Lou Ann Murray
had the Children’s Sermon
and the Children’s Sunday
School. The Branderburgs
from North Hopkins joined
the Church Sunday. Some
forgot to change their clocks
Sunday morning and were
late to church.
Cody Wesley Scott
of Charleston was born
Wednesday, March 9, 2011.
We are very happy to have a
new baby in our community.
Cody is the son of Wes and
Amanda Scott.
Verlee Morgan is doing
better.
Mary Dee and LaFray
Mitchell are both under the
weather.
Forrest Lawler is also under
the weather.
Birthdays: Trenton Jones
and Haley White 3/14; John
Henry “Dub” Goforth 3/15;

White and Tanner Crutcher
3/18; Hudson Nabors and

Regan and Bryant families.
Vela Regan Bryant passed
away Friday morning. She
was a sister of the Reverend
Gary Regan.
Joe Rakes of Amarillo,
formerly of Cooper, passed
away one day last week. Our
condolences are also for his
family.
The Delta County Historical
Commission will meet at
the Delta Diner on the east
side of the square in Cooper
Thursday, March 31 at 5 p.m.
All are welcome to meet with
us.
Roy Lee and Delores
Jackson and Jerry, Tracie,
Jake, Jhett and Jentri Jackson
attended the Timed Event
Championship at the Lazy E
Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma
last weekend. Jhett was a
helper for Rope Myers, one
of the contestants. He helped
with the horses behind the
chutes, in the arena and also
got to mingle with all the other
contestants. On Sunday they
attended Cowboy Church at
the arena with Suzie Mclntire
Eaton and her husband Mark.
Also on the program were
Rope and Candice Myers,
Paul Tierney, Jimmy Cooper,
Daniel Green, Josh Peek,
Trevor Brazile and Cash
Myers.
Greg Moore and his son
Austin of Tyler spent the
weekend in the East End.
Craig and Emily Regan of
Garland visited with Don,
Billie, and Marty Martiz
Young Wednesday, March 9.
They celebrated Craig’s 80^
birthday, which was March
7. Emily was formerly from
Ben Franklin.
John and Donna Capell of
Humble went to the Mardi
Gras in New Orleans for
three days.
Thursday, Shirley Smith
was at the Genealogy Library
in Sulphur Springs. A lady
from Sulphur Springs has
passed away recently, and
her daughter gave her papers
to the library. There were 12
journals about the Georges
and their bakery in those
papers. Shirley went to check
out those papers.
There was a small tornado
in Roxton Thursday. A barn
was blown away. I called to
see about Tommy and Jill
Hinton. They live out that
way. They were fine.
Friday the United Daughters
of the Confederacy met at the
Paris Public Library. Pam
Underwood read the message
from the President General
from the UDC magazine,
and Susan Martin had the
program. She reported on
the Irish who fought for
the Confederacy. We sang
“Dixie” and were dismissed.
Fifteen ladies attended
the Delta County Red Hat
meeting Saturday in Cooper
at Little Chef’s where they
had lunch.
The Pacio Baptist Women
had lunch at Little Chef’s in
Cooper Saturday.
Hoyt Kennemer vi sited with
us Saturday afternoon. He
went to school at Hazeldale.
Mrs. Nell Coooper Jeter and
Mr. Yandell Jeter were his
teachers. Mr. Jeter was the
principal. Hoyt brought his
seventh and eighth grade
diplomas that they had signed
to show us. Hoyt’s birthday is
March 10. His family came
and took him to the Fish Fry
for his birthday. Hoyt has a
collection of Indian artifacts
that he loaned to the Paris
Public Library for a while and
to the Dallas Fair for a while.
They were also on display for
a while in Austin.
Have a good week!
Obituary
Joe Taylor Rakes, 83, of
Amarillo passed away on
Tuesday, March 8.
Private Family Services
will be held at a later date.
Arrangements by Cox
Funeral Home. Cremation
by Cox Funeral Home.
Mr. Rakes was bom as the
seventh son and eleventh
child of Ed S. and Alta
Maude Rakes on Oct. 25,
1927, in Higgins, Texas. Joe
graduated from Borger High
School in 1946 after serving
a stint in the United States
Navy (Merchant Marines).
After graduating from High
School he enlisted in the
U.S, Navy for a two-year
tour of duty. He then stayed
in the Navy Reserves and
was called back into active
duty in January of 1950 for
the Korean War. After being
Honorably Discharged, he
studied Real Estate and was
licensed in Real Estate Sales
and Appraisals. In 1967 he
founded Guardian Alarm
Systems, and sold and
installed residential alarm
systems until he retired
in 1985. After retirement,
he lived in Cooper, Texas
with his special friend
and companion, Treva
Causey. In his spare time,
Joe enjoyed Western and
Square Dancing. He was
always very civic minded
and regularly volunteered to
do work in the community
as a member of the Optimist
Club. He was named
“Citizen of The Year” in
Delta County, Texas during
the 1990’s. Family was the
mainstay in Joe’s life. He
felt that he had been blessed
with two beautiful daughters,
three grandchildren, and nine
great-grandchildren. A value
that was the driving force in
his life centered around the
thought, “Some of Jesus’
friends wanted to be the best,
the greatest. Jesus told them
that the way to be great is
to take care of other people.
He said that taking care of
children is like taking care
of him! (Based on Mark
9:33-37) He is preceded in
death by six brothers and
four sisters.
He is survived by two
daughters, Connie Dillard
and Cindy Owen of Amarillo;
two granddaughters,
Lenis Winkle of Edmond,
Oklahoma, and Cheller
Flory-Roth of Amarillo;
one grandson, J. Roach of
Amarillo; and nine great
grandchildren, Hunter Flory,
Gunner Flory, Emerson
Turner, Chloe Roth, Sadiya
Roach, Sofia Roach, Tucker
Winkle, Tarin McNabb and
Alec McNabb.
The family suggests
memorials be made to The
Delta County Public Library;
300 West Dallas Street;
Cooper, Texas 75432.

Pastor's Corner
By Calvin Turnage,
Calvary Baptist Church
Dave knew the taxing
nature of life upon families.
This led him to take his
children out to a nearby lake
on warm, moonlit evenings.
Often times his children
would bring along glass
bottles to store fireflies they
captured in. One day, his eye
caught his youngest daughter
running about the park with
her jar crying in frustration.
“What’s the matter,
Maggie?” he asked as he
gently brushed a tear from
her cheek.
The blue shadows of
the deepening moonlight
accented her saddened
features. She sighed
frustrated, “I can’t catch the

moonbeams.”
“Honey, no one can,” he
told her.
“But they’re so pretty. I just
want to keep one of them,”
she pleaded.
“I understand, but God
didn’t give them to just you.
He gave them to everybody.
That’s why He made it so
we couldn’t catch them in a
bottle,” he explained.
In Maggie’s world, she
could keep every attractive
thing she saw. She thought
she could put anything that
glittered in a bottle and hold it
forever. Many people believe
they can live their lives this
way, gathering up all the
things that catch their eye.
This is what makes impulse
aisles at the checkout stands
so popular. Unfortunately,
chasing all the things that
glitter ends up bringing us to
ruin.
Paul wrote in I Timothy
6:6, “But godliness with
contentment is great gain.”
We would do well to pursue
the things of God and let Him

Thank you to all those people who have helped
us in our time of need with money, food and the
many other donations. It has been awesome the
heartfelt support we have received following our

are very grateful.
