HANK BARRENTINE JR.
Paramedic
honors former
EMS mentor
BY ROSEMARY SMITH
Examiner editor
St. Joseph Emergency
Medical Services Para-
medic Denise Guidry is at-
tempting to honor the
memory of her former su-
pervisor, Henry Frank
“Hank” Barrentine Jr., who
lost an 18-month battle with
brain cancer on Sept. 27,
with memorial services
planned for Nov. 3, at 2
p.m., at the Bedias Volun-
teer Fire Department.
Guidry said the 5 5-year-
old served Grimes County
as an EMT/paramedic for
approximately 20 years,
and the public is invited to
share in the celebration of
his life. Besides a life of
service that started out in
the field of education,
Guidry said Barrentine was
known for being a mentor
and positive mentor for
countless EMT’s, including
herself.
“I think that’s what
made us all better EMT’s -
just having someone be-
lieve in us. I don’t think I
ever would have become a
paramedic if it hadn’t been
for Hank instilling confi-
dence in me,” said Guidry.
As an instructor, Barren-
tine asked Guidry to attend
a paramedics course as a
visitor. Once Guidry be-
came intrigued and gained
confidence during the class,
Barrentine told her com-

County fire contracts still not resolved
BY ROSEMARY SMITH

members filled the com-
missioners courtroom on
Tuesday, as they at-
tempted to explain their
concerns over terms and
requests included in pend-
ing contracts with the
county with the help of
State Firemen’s and Fire
Marshall’s Association of
Texas Executive Director
Chris Barron of Austin.
County Judge Betty Shi-
flett reiterated that the
county would not be able
to disburse allotted annual
fixed rates - which were
increased from
$16,747.50 to $20,000 by
commissioners for the
new fiscal year that began
Oct. 1 - until new, pro-
posed contracts are signed
by individual fire depart-
ments.
While Barron ex-
plained that the cost to run
fire departments has sig-
nificantly increased, while
grant funding has signifi-
cantly decreased because
of legislative cuts, he en-
couraged commissioners
to work with the fire asso-
ciation.
He added, “We re-
cently bought an engine

lars. There’s nothing

ASCISD awarded $1M
teacher incentive grant
BY ROSEMARY SMITH
Examiner editor
In April, Anderson-
Shiro CISD Superintend-
ent Brandon Core
announced that 2011 leg-
islative cuts forced the dis-
trict to make drastic
reorganization changes.
One of the cuts included
the removal of incentives
for teachers taking lead
roles in the district’s Pro-
fessional Fearning initia-
tive. Now, thanks to the
district’s first acquired
over $1 million Teacher
Incentive Fund Grant - in-
tended to increase educa-
tor effectiveness - teachers
and students will once
again benefit from profes-
sional learning or PE ob-
jectives.
The five-year grant,
known as the Texas TIF
Project, will provide about
$40 million to the partner
districts to improve stu-
dent achievement by in-
creasing teacher and
principal effectiveness.
This year, the district will
be working on developing
a Human Capital Manage-
ment System (HCMS) that
