Despite the turnover in coaching and the move to a new league, the Collin County Rattlers have
maintained the bulk of their talent from this past season.

Coach Hearne’s defen-
sive presence seeks to bal-
ance out what coach Smith
brings on the offensive end
as Collin County had the
reverse chain of command
in effect last season with
former head coach Shawn
Ellis taking a more defen-
sive-minded approach.
As such, don’t be
shocked to see stylistic
changes for the next edition
of the Rattlers.

“I’d expect a bit more of
a West Coast look to the of-
fense,” Sam said. “A lot of
pro-style sets and play-ac-
tion passing. Tim Smith is
a lot like me in that he’s a
yankee and a Big 10 guy
from Chicago with that
run, run, pass approach.”
Fortunately, coach
Smith and Hearne will
have largely the same core
that posted a 10-0 regular
season in the TUFL this
year intact, headlined by
running back Greg Green,
defensive lineman Rod
Richardson, quarterback
Jason Barnhouse, offensive
lineman Kevin Simpson
and Hearne.
And with things like an
out-of-state scrimmage
against the Kansas
Cougars in the works, the
hectic offseason is just get-
ting started for the Rat-
tlers.
“We felt like things got a
bit stagnant these past few
seasons,” Sam said. “We
wanted to mix things up.
It’s a long season and these
guys have full-time jobs, so
you want that excitement
to maintain the whole way.
“We felt like mixing
things up and taking a look
at some greener pastures to
help bring that fire back
into our program.”
