We would like to urge every
girl and boy to write a letter
to Santa this year and send it
to The Kerens Tribune. The
Tribune promises to see that
Santa gets each letter. We hope
the Tribune’s Christmas edition
will be packed with “Letters
To Santa”.

Many parents will read the
immortal Dickens’ Christmas
Carols to their children.
Not the least of the Spirits
that visited Scrooge during his
dream was the Spirit of Christ-
mases Past. While our children
are enjoying today’s Christmas,
many adults can look back to
Christmases past as a time of
dear memories.
One year stands out in my
memory for a lesson well learn-
ed. Santa had left a beautiful
baby doll under our Christmas
tree. As I danced up the steps
of my grandmother’s house, Un-
cle Charlie Bruner asked if he
might help me with my new
baby. But, no, I wanted to carry
my baby doll without help. As is
usual, when the young reject
the help of older and wiser heads
payment came swiftly. The mem-
ory of the doll flying from my
arms, and the broken pieces lay-
ing at my feet, and most of all
the gentle sympathy offered me
toy my uncle, remains poignantly
in my mind today. A lesson I
never forgot.

For years it was traditional in
my mother’s family for the men
to eat at the big table, children
at a kitchen table and ladies

someone promoted my cousin,

Each year our big family drew
names, some 35 of us, and each
year everyone prayed fervently
for Grandma’s name, because
each wanted so badly to give
her a present. One eventful year
Grandma came up with two
presents on the tree—the person
who drew her name and a traitor!
A mock trial was held and a
court scene enacted. It was my
first and let us hope, last ap-
pearance on a witness stand.
Since the culprit was one of my
most favorite people, wild horses
could not have made me betray
him. Neither would I lie, so the
situation was difficult. As I recall,
no judgment was passed, just a
good time had by all.

The family Bible reading had
this scripture in it, “Come unto
me all who are burdened and
heavy laden and I will give you
rest.” Our blonde, who was to
celebrate her 5th birthday the
following day, after a moment’s
silence, said, “I can’t go to-
morrow.” Puzzled, someone ask-
ed, “Can’t go where?” At which
our littlest one replied, “I can’t
go to heaven, not tomorrow,
cause I’m having a birthday!”
Too bad adults who are much
closer to the gates can’t look on
the journey as philosophically.
