WILLIS—Winning a first
place in a major track and
field meet is a lot like walk-
ing off a cliff—it’s the first
step that’s crucial.
Shepherd High’s Mike Mc-
Carver, 160-pound junior
who played tight end on the
football team last fall, took
that crucial first step here
Friday afternoon when he
reeled in a first place in the
discus contest during the
10th annual Willis Relays.
Friday was McCarver’s
third meet of the season. “I
set a goal of 140 feet before
the meet,” the good looking
junior athlete said. “I nearly
reached it.”
On his last throw the
Shephed thinclad hurled the
platter 139-feet, 6-inches. “I
know now that I can go over
140-feet next week,” he said
with a big, big grin. “I feel
pretty good.” In last year’s
meet McCarver recorded a
sixth place finish with a
throw of 127-feet, 3-inches.
All-State quarterback Greg
Jones (playing for Texas
Christian University now) of
Shepherd won last year’s
first place medal with a
throw of 162-feet, 11-inches.

“I’m playing baseball and
throwing the shot put and
discus in track,” he said.
“My arm is a little sore from
baseball. I think that is the
reason I’m doing so poorly in
the shot put.”
McCarver on Saturday,
Feb. 25 placed second in the
Panther Relays at Liberty
with throw of 131-feet even.
Then on Saturday, March 3
during the Indians Relays at
Cleveland he won first place
with a throw of 133-feet,
2-inches.
McCarver’s throw here
Friday afternoon was a
career high.
The speedy Mustangs of
Madisonville captured the
10th annual Willis Relays
here on a cold Friday night.
The Mustangs compiled
109 points to win the cham-
pionship trophy and
Navasota High Rattlers
were runner-up with 93.
Willis, the host school,
finishedthird with 72.
Shepherd, who won the ti-
tle last year with
131M:-points, was fourth with
70 points.
“We do not have the depth
we had last year,” said
Shepherd High Coach Steve
Morton. “When you compete
against Madisonville and
Navasota you are facing two
fine schools with lots of
talent.” f
Madisonville was runner-
up in last year’s meet with
95%-points. Navasota was a
fourth place finish with 58.
Madisonville, Navasota,
Willis, Shepherd and Splen-
dora are all members of
District 21-AAA.
Coach Morton said his
Pirates of Shepherd will
enter the Hull-Daisetta
Relays on Saturday, March
17.
“We must train a lot
harder so we can improve
our times,” Coach Morton
noted.
Randy Roberts, a 6-foot-5
sophomore, of Shepherd did
not place in the discus con-
test. Roberts’ best throw of
the afternoon was good for
120-feet. Roberts’ father
(former Cleveland High
athlete) was an out standing
track star at Texas A&M
University. Randy has the
potential of being a truly top-
notch athlete.
Donnie Davison, a
160-pound senior, of
Shepherd was a busy Pirate
during the field events. He
placed second in the pole
vault at 12-feet even and a
sixth place in the high jump
at 6-feet even.
Rufus Johnson of Madison-
ville won the high jump at
6-feet, 2-inches. The other
five finishers cleared 6-feet.
Places were awarded on
fewest misses.
David Dick, a sophomore,
of Shepherd cleared 5-feet,
10-inches in the high jump.
"I should be able to clear
6-feet at most all meets,”
Dick said. “In a practice
meet at Shepherd last month
I jumped 6-2. There were
some good jumpers here to-
day (Friday).”
Shawn Cunningham, a
155-pound senior, of
Shepherd placed second in
the long jump with a mark of
21-feet, 5%-inches. Rufus
Smith of Clevenad was
awarded first place at 22-feet
even. Cunningham was a
third place finisher in the
100-meter dash with a time
of 11.40 seconds.
Shepherd’s 400-meter
relay foursome of Robert
Parish, Troy Punch, Shawn
Cunningham and Wilbert
Caddie clocked in a 44.02
seconds to place fourth on
Friday night. However, dur-
ing the prelims in the after-
noon they were timed at 43.6
seconds.
Shepherd’s one mile relay
team of David Allday, Larry
Roberts, David Dick and
Luther Williams did not
place among the top sue.
Wilbert Caddie, a
Shepherd senior, wasn’t
pleased with his running.
During the long jump he
placed fifth at 20-feet,
1016-inches. Ran the anchor
on the 400-meter relay that
placed fourth. Caddie was a
third place finisher in the
110-meter high hurdles with
a time of 15.17 seconds. In
last year’s meet Caddie was
first at 14.4 seconds. He was
a second place finisher in the
300-meter intermediate
hurdles with a time of 40.15
seconds.
An athlete folks are going
to hear and see for a number
of years. Lynn James,
185-pound junior, is the No. 1
quarterback for the Rattlers
of Navasota. He is super. He
placed fourth in the long
jump at 21-feet, 0%-inch (has
a sore ankle); ran the an-
chor leg on the winning
400-mete relay that posted a
winning time of 42.66
seconds; first place in the
110-meter high hurdles at
14.67 seconds; and ran the
third leg on the winning
1600-meter relay that posted
a 3:25.22 clocking.
