Lions push for sight preservation
LIVINGSTON - Sight
preservation was the
primary concern of Lions
Clubs International when it
was organized many years
ago. Today the Lions Club is
the largest service organiza-
tion in the world and still
regards vision restoration
and rehabilitation the chief
ideal of Lionism.
Dr. Jon Boultinghouse, a
local Lion-optometrist,
stated at a recent meeting
that the Livingston Lions
Club has been instrumental
in maintaining the ideal of
sight conservation at the
local level. “Our club has
provided needy children
with vision care for years
now; children who for finan-
cial reasons would have gone
without.”
The Livingston Lions Club
has recently expanded its
eye care service by purchas-
ing numerous vision screen-
ment.
“It is important to realize
that over 80 percent of all
new material learned by the
child has to come directly
through the visual system.”
Local Lions officers will
demonstrate the screening
devices at regional Lions
conventions with hopes that
Polk County will serve as a
role model for other areas to
follow.
If anyone knows a child
needing vision care but
financially cannot obtain it,
they may contact Dr. Woody
Reese to see if they qualify
for eye services through the
Livingston Lions Club.
ing devices to aid local
school nurses in determining
vision disorders in school
children.
According to Dr.
Boultinghouse, “The
response from the school
nurses was overwhelming
and enthusiastic. Our nurses
have always done a fine job
in vision screening. The new
aids provided by the Lions
Club will enable the school
nurses to detect vision pro-
blems that could not be
found with conventional
screening methods. The pro-
cedure is efficient, accurate
and easy for children to
understand. It is being utiliz-
ed in all public schools in
Polk County at this time. The
system should minimize
over-referral and allow
nurses to obtain a better
understanding of vision
disorders and how they per-
tain to scholastic achieve-
Extensions available
The IRS stresses that this
is an extension of time to file
your return-not an extension
of time for payment of taxes
due. When filing for the ex-
tension, the taxpayer must
estimate their tax owed for
1983 and send that amount
with the Form 4868 to avoid
interest and late payment
penalties.
The application for the ex-
tension must be filed by
April 16.
HOUSTON - Do you need
extra time to file your
federal tax return? The In-
ternal Revenue Service says
you may receive an
automatic four-month exten-
sion of time to file.
The application for an ex-
tension beyond the April 16
deadline is filed on Form
4868, Application for
Automatic Extension of
Time to File U.S. Individual
Income Tax Return.
