The Windthorst Trojanettes won the
Class A State Volleyball Championship
in Austin last weekend with straight set
victories over Fruitvale and Tilden
McMullen County.
"This team was the most focused group
that I have ever coached," stated Diane
Conrady. "They are extremely talented
in all areas of the sport, and they used
these talents very unselfishly to make
the team so successful."
The Trojanettes making their fourth
appearance in the state toumy in five
years, opened semi-final play at Burger
Center Friday by trouncing Fruitvale
15-0, 15-7. Mandy Zotz served 15
unanswered points in the opening game.
Time outs by Fruitvale at 5-0 after kill
shots by Jo Beth Schreiber and Stepha-
nie Veitenheimer and 12-0 were of no
avail. Schreiber and April Schroeder
combined for a block for the 13th point,
and Zotz served out the game.
Fruitvale regrouped in the second
game to go ahead 3-0. Schreiber served
2 points, but Fruitvale rang up 3 more
points to take a 6-2 advantage. Zotz
served one point, and the teams traded a
couple of side outs before Schreiber got
the serve back for the Trojanettes with a
kill. Schroeder served points 4 and 5,
Fruitvale added point7, and Schreiber
served to close the gap to 7-6. Zotz's kill
shot put Lara Conrady at the service
line, and the freshemen responded with
4 points for 10-7 Trojanette lead. The
teams traded a pair of side-outs before
Zotz returned to the service line for an
ace and the final four points. Schreiber
placecj a dink shot over the front line for
pointl2, hit a kill for 13, and blocked
two attempted spikes for 14 and 15.
Schreiber led the Trojanettes in the
semi-fianls with 7 block, 7 kills, and a
100% pass percentage. Zotz added 3
kills. April Schroeder had 3 kills and 2
blocks, and Amy Stewart added 2 kills.
Amy Pennartz had 8 set assists, and Lara
Conrady, 5.
In the Saturday morning finals the
Trojanettes jumped out to a 6-1 advan-
tage before Tilden McMullen County
closed the gap to 6-4. Amy Stewart
added service points 7 and 8, but Tilden
added two points of their own. Robin
Lindemann blocked a serve for a side
out, and Amy Pennartz and April
Schroeder served for points 9 and 10.
McMullen County ran off 4 unanswered
points before Mandy Zotz held her serv-
ice for 4 points. April Schroeder served
the winner for game number 1.
McMullen County opened game two
with what would eventually be their
only point. Zotz put all of her first 9
serves into play successful, and the
Trojanettes responded. Schroeder
tipped one over the net for point # 1, and
Schreiber hit a kill shot down the line.
The Trojanette senior got point 3 on a set
from Pennartz, and Pennartz got #4 on a
set from Schreiber. After McMullen
County was called for a lift, Stephanie
Veitenheimer hit a kill shot to the back
line and the South Texans took a time
out The ball changed hands after two
more points, but Schreiber retaliated by
blocking the serve. Pennartz came on to
serve out the game and the match.
Schreiber, who was named to the all-
tournament team, had 10 kills and 5
blocks in the finals. Schroeder, also an
all-tournament selection, had 4 kills and
1 block. Zotz had 4 kills in addition to
her accurate serving, and she was allso
selected for the all-toumamnet team.
Pennartz had 11 set assists; Veiten-
heimer, 2 kills; Stewart 2 kills and 100%
passing percentage; and Conrady 4 set
assists.
The Trojanettes service percentage for
the tournament was 98% with Schroe-
der, Zotz, Stewart, and Conrady serving
100%.
Windthorst, coached by Diane
Conrady and Scotta Schroeder, ended
their championship season with a record
of 30-5. Team members included Amy
Stewart, Robin Lindeman, Stephanie
Veitenheimer, Mandy Zotz, Jo Beth
Schreiber, April Schroeder, Lara
Conrady, Jacqueline Wolf, Angie Wolf,
Ginger Berend, Amy Pennartz, Tricia
Hoffman, Amber Stewart, statistician
Misty Anderson, and scorekeeper Crys-
tal Walker.
Holliday Lady Eagles Capture Silver
The Holliday Lady Eagles converted
their second trip to the UIL State AA
volleyball tournament in Austin into sil-
ver medals Saturday. The Lady Eagles
defeated Quitman in the semi-finals
Friday 15-10, 15-3. They battled East
Bernard, who won their 12th state title,
before falling 8-15,11-15.
In the opening round, the Lady Eagles
fell behind 2-0 before Michelle Fergu-
son served for 4 straight points. Julie
Lovett came on to serve for 3 more
points and a 7-2 advantage. Melissa
Haggerty added another point,
butQuitman picked up 2. The Lady
Eagles increased their margin to 11-8,
but the East Texans inched back up to
11-10. After a couple of side-outs,
Lovett served out the final four points.
Korie Wallace served for the first 3
points in the second game before
Quitman came back to tie the game at 3-
3. The Lady Eagles then took control of
the contest. They lost their serve seven
more times in the contest, but each time
they prevented Quitman from scoring.
Parkey served 5 of the remaining 11
points including the final two. Lovett
had 3 kills between the Lady Eagles'
10th and 11th points to preserve the
lead. The team served 94%. Wallace
and Parkey demonstrated excellent set-
ting with Lovett controlling the net of-
fensively and J. J Bagiev doing likewise
defensively.
In the finals at Burger Center Saturday
morning, Holliday came up against an
East Bernard team that has been to the
state tournament 18 times since 1967
...all with the same coach.
The Lady Eagles opened the finals
with Wallace serving for 4 of the first 5
points while Lovett was dishing out 2
kills and a block. East Bernard took a
time time out and then closed to the gap
to 4-5. A kill by 6T Cryatal Kubena,
who was named MVP of the tourney,
and two service ace s caused Holliday to
take a time out trailing 5-7. After trading
side-outs, Parkey served for 2 points,
and Stacey Carpenter's serve added 1
more on Bagley's block. East Bernard
picked up 3 points for a 10-8 advantage
before Brenna Whitley's spinning jump
serves and two kills by Kubena closed
out the game.
Michelle Skipworth opened the sec-
ond game by serving for 3 points. The
Lady Eagles went up 5-0 on aces by
Ferguson and Lovett before East Ber-
nard got on the scoreboard. The teams
settled into long volleys that saw East
Bernard close to 4-6. Lovett served an
acerbut East Bernard battled back to go
up by 9 -7. Bagley and Ferguson set up
a double block for point #8, and
Haggerty and Wallace served for points
that put Holliday back in the lead at 10-
9. Five possession changes occurred
before Kubena's spike tied the score at
10-10. The team s traded points before
a 3-point run gave East Bernard game
and match point at 14-11. The Lady
Eagles fought off two match points, but,
were unable to score before East Ber-
nard claimed the title.
Holliday served 98% for the game that
ended their season with a record of 26-3.
Lovett and Bagley were named to the
all-tournament team. Wallace, Parkey,
and Haggerty joimxl Lovett in serving
100% for the tournament.
The Lady Eagles, coached by Brenda
Zotz included Renee' Stone, Melissa
Haggerty, Summer Bowling, Keri
Schlabs, Michelle Skipworth, Korie
Wallace, Jennifer Parkey, Stacey Car-
penter, J. J. Bagley, Julie Lovett, Mich-
elle Ferguson, Ashlee McAfee, Lynsey
Bekendam, Vanessa Kocks, and
Heather Algood.

Up^This Season

Boosters Monday night Band Booster President Jerry Cox made the presen-
tation.

The bright lights of beautiful dis-
plays will kick off the 1992 Christ-
mas festivities in Archer City. All
residents are encouraged to light up
their homes for this Chamber of
Commerce sponsored event. Each resi-
dence and business with a display will
be judged by five out-of-town judges
sometime between December 1st and
10th. The judges will consider neat-
ness and how much time and effort
was put forth when looking for the
best overall display.
Two business winners will be
picked with prizes of free advertising
in The News. The top three residential
winners will receive "Shop At Home
Bucks" to be used at any Archer City
business. First place will receive $200
worth of "Shop At Home Bucks",
second place will get $150 and third
place $100.
Chamber of Commerce candy cane/
light sets are available for sale at the
Christmas tree lot at the Sno-N-Go on
South Center.
All youngsters are invited to enter
the coloring contest. Entry forms are
available in this week and next week's
issues ot The News. One lucky win-
ner will be drawn from all of the
entries. This child will get to ride
with Santa in the parade.
"A Storytime Christmas" parade is
set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, December
12. A queen and king from each of the
area schools will be featured with all
the various parade entries. Call Lillian
Wheeler at 692-1289 for more informa-
tion.
For everyone's enjoyment, local
entertainment will be provided before
and after the parade on the courthouse
lawn. A tent will be set up also on
the lawn for children to visit with Ol'
Saint Nick.
First Half of 1992
County Taxes Due
Just a reminder to let you know if
you would like to take advantage of
the half-payment option on your 1992
county taxes, you must make the first
payment before December 1st. Any
payments made after that will be
posted as partial payments.
If you pay the first half before
December 1st, then you can pay the
second half before July 1st with no
penalty and interes t.
If you have any questions, please
call the Archer County Tax Office at
574-4224. Also, the tax office will
be closed Thursday and Friday for
Thanksgiving.
Christmas Tree
Forest To Open
The 2nd Annual Christmas Tree
Forest will be opening the day after
Thanksgiving. There will be a limited
amount of trees so buy early for a
good selection. The Forest is spon-
sored by the Asse mbly of God, 574-
2325.

Saturday Jamborees for November
and December have been cancelled.
They will resume in January.

Office Announces
Holiday Hours
The Holliday ]X>stmaster has an-
nounced the post office will be open
until 5:00 p.m. beginning December.
5th each evening Monday through
Friday for holiday mailing. He also
announced it will be open each Satur-
day until Christmas (December 5th,
12th and. 19th) from 7:45 to 10:00
a.m.
