Conservation News
Rotating Cropland Pays
Fred Westfall, in the Blair
Soil Conservation group, has
used Kobe (Lespedexa in rota-
tion for several years. In the
spring of 1952 his Kobe
meadow was turned under and
planted to corn. At the time of
planting 400 pounds of 5-10-5
was applied. Without the aid
of any other fertilizer he pro-
duced 100 bushels per acre.
Mr. Westfall thinks the in-
crease was due to the extra
humus and moisture accumu-
lated while in meadow.
Other Bide of Fence is Greener
The New Hope colored
group went on a pasture and
forest tour recently. The group
observed pasture and pasture
management on the farm of
BlucSi Hayes, Fred Westfall
and Weeks Crawford.
The different pasture plants
seen included Crimson, Yellow
Hop, and White Dutch Clover.
The grasses were Fescue and
Abruzzi Rye.
These pastures were being
grazed heavily at the time and
had been grazed since January
1st.
Claybum Yarbrough had
a good stand of Austrian Peas
shovv the group.
Henry Caraway of Bobo
Colored group gave some good
advice on woodland manage-
ment. He had a good stand of
timber to back him up.
Henry says he started to
sell all of his timber for
hundred fifty dollars. Instead
he called in the Soil Conserva-
tion technicians for an esti-
mate of the value. He was then
aided in marking his timber.
The marked timber brought
him more than he was first of-
fered for all the stand. He still
has an excellent stand of
merchantable trees and has
fifteen hundred
worth in the past six years. An
average of thirty dollars per
acre per year.
Pasture Plants Won’t
Grow Without Fertilizer
Vernon Bartle of Carrol
Town says he did not. fertilize
his pasture this year. As a re-
sult he is getting very limited
grazing. He says the same pas-
ture last year furnished an
abundance of grazing because
he fertilized heavily.
He now plans to top dress
with a mixture of 6-24-24 and
Ammonium Nitrate. With this
booster applied he expects
good grazing in about ten
days.
Por.d* Being Constructed
The Soil Conservation Serv-
ice recently aided Gilmer Ty-
son and Walter (Buck) Griffin
in staking pond sites for con-
struction.
