Here is the essay that won
ftp* among 10,000 to 14,000 *
entries in which Janice tells
all *f Kt "why we murt con-
serve our soil and water.”
Water and lift are synoay-
moas hi many ways. In the
Bible and other literature one
often sees the phrase “water of
lift."
Food and life are alto close-
ly connected. Since food is so
Intimately connected with the
soil and so completely depend-
ent upon it, we may easily con-
clude- that without sol! there
could be no food and without
food there could he no life
Therefore one eoald truthfully
•ay that there cnald be no life
without soil.
Water, In whatever form,
rain, snow, lakes, etc. makes it
possible for the-soil to produce
foed. ft conld not do -o with-
out water, therefore the lack
of water or toil makes it im-
possible to produce food.
Hence, both are India?esaabie.
Rain or water makes forest*
possible also. Foreeta help to
some extern in the regulation
of climate and the riow of wa-
ter. The leaf mold of forests
has much to do with the regu-
lar low of water, on oil land
surfaces. They detain, hold
the water and thereby prevent
soil eroafen.
When we study the history
of China and the near East,
we might easily conclude that
civilisation is preserved to the
extent that it* water and soil
am concerned or that It de-
clines as it loses Its water and
soil.
Since oar forefather* looked
upon our forests as something
to be destroyed, because they
hindered progress, wc have
been mistreated by those who
cared much ter u*. Our waste-
ful habits have caused us tc
lose soil and water
So it is now Imperative that
we act wisely and conserve the
things that are so essential to
our life. We must conserve
