had wide range. Some defined
a Communist as a “Red.” Some
said a Communist was a Rus-
sian. One said the difference
between Communists and
Democrats was that the Com-
munists refer everything to a
council and the Democrats re-
fer everything to a committee.

- Ber. Tisinger, Dallas mem-
ber of the State Board of Edu-
cation. believes the way to
combat Communism is to teach
Americanism. He proposed to
the Board that text books to
teach Americanism be requir-
ed in three of the junior high
school grades.
Tisinger said the Commun-
ists used the school method to
foster Communism and he fa-
vors fighting it in the same
way.
He quotes a section from the
primer used in Russia to make
their pupib believe the capi-
talist system is ali wrong.
. The primer reported that

- Governor O'Daniel's renom-
ination in the first Democratic
primary means that, barring
unexpected happenings, he
will place an additional ap-
pointee on the three-member
State Governing Boards.
There is some speculation at
Austin that the Governor's
popular victory wili also soften
the Senate toward confirma-
tion of some of his first term
appointees for whom rough
going had been anticipated.
One report was that Chair-
man Harry Knox of the State
Board of Control might change
his legal residence from
Brown wood to Austin if Sen.
Penrose Metcalfe of Sar. An-
gelo should oppose Knox’s
confirmation. There seems to
be an unwritten rule in the
Senate that an appointee shall
not be confirmed if he is ob-
jectionable to the home sena-
tor.

- Control Board Member
Frank Davis of Itasca will also
come before the next Senate
for confirmation. Normally no
vacancy will occur on that
board during Governor O’Dan-
iel’e second tenc. if these two
| members are confirmed. Their
appointments were made after
the last session of the Legisla-
ture. The third membership,
held by Tom DeBerry of Bo-
gota, was designated by For-
mer Gov. James V. Alired and
does not expire until Dec. 31,
