'Bronze Star Medal.
Citation for the award,
which was signed by Vice Ad-
miral J. L Hail, Jr., Comman-
der Amphibious Forces, U. S.
.Pacific Fleet, reads: “For
heroic service in connection
with operations against the
enemy as a member of • recon
naissance platoon of an under-
water demolition team engag-
ed in obtaining information on
enemy-held landing beaches
and defenses during the am-
phibious assault and capture
of Leyte, P. L, on. Oet *9,
1944. Displaying outstanding
skill and fearless devotion to
duty in the face of intense ma-
chine-gun and rifle fire, he
greatly assisted his platoon in
carrying out the hazardous re-
. connaissance mission with con-
tributed materially to the
success of this amphibious op-
eration. His coolness and cour-
age during this action were in
keeping with the highest tra-
ditions of the United States
Naval Service.”
Hughes enlisted in the Navy,
Oct. 26, 1943, and served over-
seas for 7 months, where he
took part in the Philippine Lib-
eration Campaign. Along with
his present award, he wears
the Bronze Star and tlie Com-
mendation ribbon.
Hughes is a graduate of
Timpson High School, Timp-
son. Texas, and is now taking
a business and accountant
course. Port Arthur College,
Port Arthur, Texas. He and
his wife and 11-raontb-oid son,
Joseph Wayne, live at 2743
