Texas Charters Show
Moderate Decline
Austin, Tex.—A moderate
decline occurred during De-
cember, both in comparison
with the preceding month and
the corresponding month last
year, in the number of new
charters granted Texas corpo-
rations, the University of Tex-
as Bureau of Business Re-
search has reported. Total
capitalization of the new firms,
however, increased sharply.
“According to reports from
the office of Secretary of
State, 93 new firms were char-
tered during the month, a de-
cline of 12.3 per cent from No-
vember and 18.4 per cent from
December,” the Bureau’s
statement said.
“The number for ail of 1937
was 9.1 per cent less than in
1936. Total capitalization,
$2,761,000, increased 82.2 per
tent over November and 60.2
per cent over December, 1936.
There was a gain of 2.2 per
cent in total capitalization In
1937 over the preceding year.

MEASLES
By the use of a special stain,
Dr. Jean Broadhurst has made
it possible to recognize the
presence of measles virus three
days before the patient has a
ra3h. The discovery will prob-
ably be found to be of greater
scientific than practical im-
portance. Measles is a very,
very common disease and, un-
til doctors have a lot more
time, or health departments a
much larger personnel, it is
doubtfui whether this special
method of diagnosis will be
used frequently enough to con-
trol epidemics.
For the present at least,
whenever an epidemic of
measles is going on, the safest
thing is to keep children under
four years of age away from
any other children that might
possibly be coming down with
the disease. It is in the first
three years of life that measles
is dangerous to life. If a child

Whenever a child less than
four years old is known to
have been exposed to infec-
tion, he should receive a dose
of serum to prevent or modify
the attack. Your doctor should
be consulted immediately that
you suspect the exposure. He
will know what to give and
when to give it.
Naturally, if your child
comes down with measles after
he has been playing with the
neighbor’s children, you will
let the neighbor know at once
