At last, in American history,a
sad chapter of seeming ingrati-
tude has been superceded by
an act of gratitude. Congress
now has passed a resolution
tendering to Gen. Douglas Mc-
Arthur the thanks of the na-
tion for his distinguished mil-
itary service to the American
j People.
So far aa the official record
is concerned. General McAr-
thur has been listed since 1951
as an officer removed from all
command for alleged insubor-
dination. A committee of
Congress investigated at the
time, but a Democratic Con-
gress hesitated to censure the
impulsive act of s Democratic
President who was miffed by
something that could have
been handled more gracefully.
It happened that General
McArthur answered a letter
of inquiry from the Republican
leader in the House of Repre-
sentatives, Joseph W. Martin
of Massachusetts. The letter,
incidentally, was never intend-
ed for publication.
General McAnbnr had two
commands at the time. He
was commander of the Allied
occupation of Japan, also com-
mander of the United Nations
forces in Korea. Had the
American President wished,
he could have changed com-
manders in Korea without dis-
turbing the position which
General McArthur held in Ja-
pan. Mr. Truman chose to
strip General McArthur of all
command and'bring him home
with a pnblie repudiation.
The resolution, finally pass-
ed unanimously, reads as fol-
lows:
'Resolved by the House of
Representatives, the Senate
concurring, that the thanks
and appreciation of the Con-
gress and the American people
are hereby tendered to Gen. of
the Army Douglas McArthur
in recognition of his outstand-
ing devotion to the American
people, his brilliant leadership
during and following World
War 11, and the unsurpassed
affection held for him by the
people of the Republic of the
Philippines which has done so
much to strengthen the ties of
friendship between the people
of that nation and the people
of the United States.”
It seems unfortunate that a
political incident has cal
such a long delay in giving full
recognition to a brave man
who performed s brilliant ser-
vice for his country in many
command posts. At last the
record has been set straight,
and, fortunately, this c«
during the lifetime of the 82-
year-old veteran.
Congress apparently is not
willing that in official history
the memory of what Douglas
McArthur did for his country
should lade away but wants
it to remain Instead an endur-
ing example of devotion to the
nation’s service.—-The Hous-
ton Chronicle.

4-H Forestry
Program Expanded
College Station — Approxi-
mately 1.000 East Texas 4-H
Club members are enrolled in
the two 1962 Sears-Rotbock
Foundation Forestry Award
Programs, reports BUI Smith,
extension forester.
These youth represent 23 in-
dividual clubs in 13 counties.
Heading the list in numbers is
Polk county with four 4-H
Club; followed by Marion and
Rusk counties, three each; An-,
derson, Nacogdoches, and;
Smith counties, two each; and
Bowie, Gregg, Hardin, Harri-
son, Morris, Montgomery, and
Wood counties, one each. This
year a new program has been
initiated for Negro 4-H Clubs
and 11 of tbe entrants are en-
rolled in this phase of the pro-
gram.-
The purpose of the program,
sponsored by the Extension
vServke and the SearvRoebuck
Foundation, is to provide 4-H
members with an understand-
ing and working knowledge of
forest management practices.
Also, to help them recognize
the importance of East Texas
farm woodlands aa a source of
income and of raw material for
farm and industrial consump-
tion. This is accomplished by
providing fhe youth with small
tracts of land on which they
can carry out timber manage-
ment practices such as tree
planting, fire protection, con-
trol of undesirable hardwoods,
thinning and marketing of pro-
ducts.
Tbe work is performed und-
er the supervision of county *-
gents, local 4-H adult leaders,
and foresters employed by
wood-using industries and the
Texas Forest Service, Smith
said.
