TOMMY JOHN LIKES
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Tommy John the Now
York Yankee mound nee
says ho would hnvo fewer
victories this season if ho
still wero pitching in the
National League. John
who went to the Yankees
from Los Angeles as a frco
agent between seasons
crodits the American
Leaguo's dcsignatcd-hltt-or
rule with keeping him in
games instead of being
yanked for a pinch hitter.
John said ho selected the
Yankees from among 12
teams seeking his Ser-
vians even though the of-
fer wasn't second bc3t.
"Atlanta made mo the
best offer by at least
S500.000" ho said. "I nar-
rowed tho list down to five
clubs: Cincinnati Reds St.
Louis Cardinals Kansas
City Royals Milwaukee
Brewers and Yankees."
But what sold him on New
York was its defensive in-
field tho run-scoring cap-
abilities of the team the
fact that Yankee Stadium
is an excellent park for a
lefthanded hitter and the
selling job of team owner
Gcorgo Steinbrenner.
