DOCTOR DENIES POISON ATTEMPT — Dr. Hugh G. Hamil-

clares he is innocent of charges made by police that he allegedly
tried to poison his wife. Police maintain they found seven cap-
sules of cyanide, like those mixed in with similar-looking capsules
of medicine Dr. Hamilton had prescribed fot his wife, in Hamil-
ton’s clothing at the hospital. A police spokesman said Dr. Hamil-
ton told him he had the poison at the hospital to take his own life

Says Rival Agents
In Tug-of-War
Tokyo, Mar. 29 (if) — A Tokyo
newspaper is carrying an account
today of what it rails a tug-of-
war between Red and American
agents over the atomic secrets.
This puper (Asalti) says the
agents are active in a tiny fish-
ing port (Yaisu) where the fish-
ing boat, Lucky Dragon, docked
after being showered with ashes
from the hydrogen blast at Bikini
on March first. This port is 100
miles southwest of Tokyo.
According to the account, Red
agents are trying to steal radio-
active ashes and clothing from the
crewmen who were aboard the
Lucky Dragon.
So far, American diplomatic
and military sources have kept
•quiet on the subject, but it’s
assumed that intelligence agents
have been alerted. The provincial
health office has indicated that
anyone wishing to steal the
clothes would have quite a job,
because they are being kept un-
der lock and key.

Tiili really got started on his
sueeersful eareer three years ago
when he was chosen to play the
hero of "Island of Desire," op-
posite Linda Darnell.
He says frankly that he thought
he wasn't going to get another
break in pictures, because even
though fan mail poured in for
him, the studio didn't give him
another movie role for a whole
.Year. He adds, "The only work I
hail was a TV film for $500. But
I didn't give up hope. I kept
taking diction lessons, studied
voice and read plays aloud at
least one hour every day.”
The blond, bright-eyed star is
glad now that lie did all these
things, for he feels they have
paid off by winning his present
role for him. And veteran di-
reetor Raoul Walsh predicts a
very successful career for this 23-
year-old star.
Perhaps you’re wondering where
he got the name Tab Hunter.
Well, it seems the actor’s leal
name is Art Gelien. But this is
the era of unusual names, as ft*
instance Rock Hudson, Race Gen-
try, Touch Connors, and so on.
So the movie agents figured their
client would have to be tabbed
something else. And one of them
said, "Tab—that’s it.” And since
the actor was a horse enthusiast.

Thousand Leagues
Mont-j Under the Sea," by Jules Verne,
is being made into a super-movie.
Walt Disney is converting the
famous French novelist's dream-
ings into vivid reality. But even
Verne couldn't have imagined
what Disney is doing with the
Hattie story.
It was in 1870 that Verne
dreamed up his most famous book,
and it was the sensation of its
time. It told of a fanatical scient-
ist who roamed the ocean lanes in
a huge submarine. No wonder the
frist atomic sub was named after
the Nautilus of the hook. Verne
described his undersea craft as
being run hy the harnessed power
of the universe.
Jimes Mason stars as Captain
Nemo in this production—Dis-
ney’s most costly film. The hill
is being estimated at more than
three million dollars.
Right costly weeks were spent
in shooting locations in Nassau
and Jamaica, mostly underwater.
A brand new stage was built on
the Disney lot for a water tank
to hoq.se? Captain Nemo’s sub and
a huge, i-ponge rubber squad.
The designers faced the pro-
blem of creating mechanisms that
were practical yet in the Victor-
ian period. The sub couldn’t look
like the cigar-shaped vessels of
tday. It wus a rugged look that
reminds one of a combination
Merrimac and the Loch Ness
monster.
Verne described his men as
walking underwater without life-
lines or other gadgets. Special
suits were designed combining the
features of a diving suit and
aqualung.
According to Disney's design-
ers, submarines had been attempt-
ed before Verne’s time, but never
with much success. Leonardo Da
Vinci left a design of one.
Americans attempted to use a sub
on the British in the war of 1812,
and confederates tried in the
Civil War. Neither was successful.
A Disney spokesman says,
"Verne predicted the double-hull-
ed submarine. All modern subs
have two hulls, one inside the
other. Verne also had electricity
aboard his sub. But with all his
foreseeing, he didn't predict two
basic things—the periscope and
the torpedo.”
Now for some brief news from
Hollywood:
Gary Cooper is becoming one
of the film colony's most traveled
stars. When he completes his pres-
ent assignment—a co-starring
role with Burt Lancaster in “Vera
wood for a
take off again for foreign lands.
Cooper, whose film roles have
quite often during tne past two
years called him away from Hol-
lywood this time is heading for
Scandinavia. He will travel to
Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
“Prince Valiant" is 20th Cen-
tury-Fox's most elaborate cinema-
scope production since “The
Robe.” James Mason, Janet Leigh,
Robert Wagner, Debra Paget,
Sterling Hayden, Victor McLag-
len, Donald Crisp and Brian Ah-
ernc top the star-studded east.
Popular songwriter Johnny
Mercer is busy writing the words
and musjc for "Daddy Long
Legs." That's the musical which j
is to star Fred Astaire and Leslie j
Caron.
Bruce Bennet is enthusiastic I
about his role in “Strategic Air I
Command.” Paramount's new vis- j
tavision production stars James j
Stewart and June Allyson.

Needly Refugees
Heidelberg, Germany, Mar. 29
t/fi—Most soldiers are glad to get
a little mail, but First Lieutenant
Howard Stinson of San Jose, Cal-
ifornia, gets his mail by the ton.
He'* a member of Che Heidel-
berg chapter of the Masonic ord-
er. He suggested some time back
to a visiting mason that some
clothing be sent to Germany to
help refugees. Since then, more
than 12,000 pounds of clothes,
shoes and other necessities have
been mailed to Stinson.
He’s enlisted 50 other members
of the Heidelberg chapter to help
handle the largess. And mail call
is getting bigger all the time.
He says; “With more and more
of the 11,920 chapters entering
the drive each day, there's no

Plan to Distribute
Surplus Food
Washington, Mar. 2!) lift— A
Democratic congressman from
California — Samuel Yorty —
says the administration ought to
develop what he calls a "modern
version of the food stamp plan.”
The one Yorty’s referring to
was in use during depression years
preceding World War 2. Needy
people were given stamps (hey
could turn in at stores in exchange
for surplus food, t
Yorty says he jy iconvinced that
at least 10 to-49) per cent of our
population today is suffering
from an inadequate diet. This
wh'le unemployment is growing,
he says, and with living cosis con-
tinuing at record highs.
Recommending a revival of the
food stamp plan, the congressman
says: “Let’s quit ta'king about the
high cost of storing our farm sur-
pluses and begin doing something
about distributing them to disad-
vantaged people in our own com-
munities."
