WASHINGTON Aug. G. A
shrinkage in throe monts of
$380000000 in the estimated
government income for this
fiscal year based on the present
revenue law is disclosed by the
slaterntent recently presented to
the house ways and means com-
mittccs by Secretary Mellon.
The total income is estimated
)H)Wat$4217G'13000 as against I
the estimate of $'lD47G13O0Oj
contained in Mr. Mellon's letter
of last April 30 to Chairman
Fordnncy.
In the same time the estimat-
ed expenditures have decreased
only $1180-1216. The estimate
excess of disbursements over re-
ceipts is placed now at $330309-
517 as compared with an esti-
mate o f$18234033 made by
tho treasury last April.
Of the total shrinkage in re-
ceipts $130000000 is charged
to the expected falling off in In-
ternal revenue largely as a re-
sult of the present business de-
pression Tho refraining $200-
000000 is accounted for by a re-
vision of the estimated amount
to be received in interest on for-
eign obligations.
LIZZIE WANTS BUT LITTLE
Low McCall says that motor-
ists who como through Colum-
bus on route for Kansas City
have about the following con-
versation when they slop at tho
filling station hero:
If it's n Cadillac the drive
says: "How far is it to Kansai
City?" "One hundred and forty
miles" is tho reply. "Gimme
twenty gallons of gns and a gal-
lon of oil" says tho driver.
Then comes a Buick and tho
chauffeur says: "How far is it
to Kansas City?" "Ono hundred
and forty miles." Gimme ten
gallons of gas and a half gallon
of .oil" and ho drives on. Along
comes a flivver and the driver
uncranks himself gets out and
stretches and asks: "How far
is it to Kansas City?" "Oh
about ono hundred and forty
miles." "Is that all? Gimmo
two quarts of water and a bottle
of '3-in-l' nnd hold this son-of-a-gun
until I get in." Columbus

The story going the rounds
about "Air. Deduct" was gone
"one better" here Wednesday
when a local merchant and col-
Ion buyer get returns from
three bales of low grade cotton
sold at Houston. For those who
nave not heard the story of "Mr.
Deduct" wje will first relate it
then give the Halletlsvile cotton
case. The history follows: A
winner shipped out a car of corn
and a few days later went to the
bank and asked for a loan. Tho
banker replied "Why Mr. Far-
mer you just sold a car of corn
a few days ago what did you do
.with all that money?" Tho
fanner shook his head and slow-
ly replied : "Well you see Mr.
Deduct got most of that. It
Jjrought $300; for freight was
"deluded" $90; decuct for load-
ing and unloading $15; deduct
shrinkage $10; deduct commis-
sion $25; deduct storage $10;
deduct one-fourth rent $75; de-
duct help in hauling from farm
to railroad $15; deduct $5 for
meals for men helping haul ; this
makes Mr. Deduct get $2G5; so
you see that only left mo $35
nui I had to pay off a $30 nolo
for money J borrowed for help to
have that corn plowed and gath-
ered. This loft me $5.00 nnd I
thought mayme that $5 would
pay interest on money enuogh
to buy- mo a suit of clothes for
I wore out nry old suit working
with that corn."
Now to get to the three bale.
of cotton bringing 21 cents. This
la actual facts and a genuine
transaction. Alocal merchant
cotton buyer had a commis-
sion firm sell for him three low
bales of cotton which ho had on
storage and tho following is the
actual figures show on state-
ment of the sale: 3 bales weight
478; -105? 462; total of 13-15
pounds; price '1 1-2 cents; total
amount received for three balea
$G0.52; loss freight $7.2G; stor-
age G months $11.70; insurance
12 months $36 ; reranging $105 ;
commission nnd charges $-1.05;
.tax 22c; total $G0.28. Thld
leaves a balance of 24 cents the
amount remitted to the mer
chant for his three bales of cot-
ton. Tho firm handling the cot-
ton is a reliable one the abovo
showing however that "costs"
nnd "deduct" get it all. Hal-
