Devilish mascot under fire
school mugs, pencils and class
lings.
Now, Mrs. Brewer’s group is
trying rally constituents
against the Red Devil, hoping
the threat of ballot box pressure
might change the school
board’s mind.
“I am certain we represent
the views of every Christian in
this town. It’s just that they
don’t want to come forward to
speak,” she said.
TRe group recently sent
letters to the 350 voters who
turned out for the last board
‘Grandma, I’m a Red Devil.’
“I told him what a terrible
thing that was for him to say.”
Later, Mrs. Brewer said, the
wide use of the mascot per-
suaded her to start her cam-
paign. A mat outside the school
doors reads “Welcome to the
Home of the Red Devil." A sign
in the basketball gym reads
“Satan’s Pit.” A caricature of a
devil’s head is painted on the
gym floor. The student
newspaper is called “The
Devil’s Advocate.” The Red
Devil has also appeared on
election. The letters point to
what Mrs. Brewer calls the
“high alcoholism” of WS
students, a problem she says
may be related to the Red
Devil. School officials deny her
allegation of rampant
alcoholism in students.
“To me, the devil is not a
joke,” said the Rev. Donald
Bauer of St Helena’s Church in
Sherrill, another member of the
anti-devil group. “He is not a
harmless, silly creature to be a
patron saint of youth. He is my
archenemy."

VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - The
public school system’s Red
Devil mascot is under fire from
a citizens group led by an 81-
year-okl grandmother who says
the students are worshiping
Satan by showing school spirit.
“I can’t think of any symbol
for the team which would be
worse," said Catherine Brewer,
who formed “God’s Concerned
Citizens.” The 38-member
group is trying to exorcise the
Red Devil from the Vernon-
Verona-Sherrill school system
where it has reigned supreme
for the past 25 years.
The Red D^Vil is the symbol
for girls’ and boys' sports
teams. The district, about 25
miles east of Syracuse, enrolls
about 3,880 students in grades 1
through 11
- Since last fall, several at-
tempts by God’s Concerned
Qtnens have failed to persuade
the board of education that the
devil should go.
“If they could come to me and
show me that the mascot makes
our kids different in any ad-
verse ways, then we'd consider
changing the thing,” said school
Superintendent Albert Kouba.
“Bat they haven’t proved that
Our kids are good kids.”
Mrs. Brewer, a grandmother
of seven and semi-retired
lawyer, said she first learned
about foe mascot in 1978 when
she saw it on a refreshment
track in the parking lot of her
church.
*T asked my grandson, ‘Bill,
why is the devil in oar church's
parting lot?’” Mis Brewer
recalled. “He said, ‘Why',
Grandma, that’s our mascot in
school’ Well, I couldn’t believe
this. It ohunwd me. He was an
athlete in high school and he
puffed up his chest and said
