A Guiding Inspiration
By Michael Garcia/

Grandmothers are parents' worst
nightmare! Why? Because they spoil their
grandchildren and at times interfere in dis-
ciplining.
On the other hand, grandmothers,
like mine, teach their grandchildren mor-
als and values. For this reason, my grand-
mother has been the most inspiring per-
son in my life. She has taught me to keep
good relations with my family and to be
nice to all of them.
The most important value she taught
was-to get the best education possible.
While her children were growing up, she
taught them to get a good education so that
they wouldn't have to work as hard as she
did. My grandmother was separated from
my grandfather she held two or more jobs
to keep the family going. She worked
nights and days, but she always arranged

to be home to
make sure the
kids got off to
school and re-
turned safely.
In the late
1960s it was
hard for His-
panic families
to have all their
kids graduate
from high school. My mother and her sis-
ter and brothers were fortunate to receive
diplomas only because they worked as a
family should.
My grandmother recently passed
away and I think of her every day and
question why she had to leave so soon.
My only wish was for her to see me walk
down Barry Field. While she won't be there
physically, I do know she will be at heart.

Honor thy mother

Mother’s Day is a day set aside
to honor motherhood. In the United
States, it is observed on the second Sun-
day of May. This year Mother+s Day
falls on May 12.
The idea for Mother's Day is
generally credited to Anna M. Jarvis
whose mom died May 9,1905. In the
years after her mother's death, Anna
held memorial services and encouraged
other sons and daughters to remember
their mothers in similar ways. She
wrote thousands of letters to influential
people and in 1913, both her home state
of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Congress,
voted to support the idea of a special
day to honor mothers everywhere.
Mother+s Day is a day when we
should be thankful for our mothers and
everything they do for us. Sometimes we
forget about our mothers and take for
granted everything they do for us. Some-
times it seems like they are only there to
wash clothes and cook dinner, but the role
of the mother of the family has changed
greatly. No longer are the women expected
to stay at home to care for the house.and
the children.
More and more women are learning
how to handle motherhood and a career.
They work all day and then come home to
care for their family. It amazes me how one
person can have so many people demand-
ing time and attention and still come
through.
So, to all mothers everywhere,
thank you for always taking care of us
when we were sick, listening to us when
we had something to say, buying us things
even when we didn't need them, and most
of all for being our mothers.
You are truly appreciated.
