Some smoke detectors not all they should be
the most common house fire in a
timely manner, says electrical engi-
neering professor Dr. B. Don Russell,
an associate dean of engineering at
Texas A AM University.
Russell, who has been studying
detector failure for more than a de-
cade, has testified in several court
cases involving smoke detectors and
has been a guest on the ABC News
program "20-20" for a segment on
smoke detectors.
Most smoke detectors in homes
on the market — about 90 percent,
by some estimates—sense fires and
smoke by using an ionization cham-
ber, Russell says.
"Ionization detectors are faster
than moat other techniques on flam-
ing fires," Russell said. "However,
they are not as timely in detecting
flameless combustion like smolder-
ing fires caused by something like
electrical shorts or cigarettes in up-
holstery."
Photoelectric smoke detectors
are the beat for sensing smoldering
fires, which often fill rooms with
smoke before flames can be seen,
Russell says.
