With a big load of extras, and four
wheel drive, plus automatic trans-
mission, the Isuzu Tbooper was
something new for me to drive re-
cently.
Weighing two tons, this machine
gives you a feeling of comfort and
safety, and is still easy to handle.
While primarily a Japanese prod-
uct, this one has an automatic trans-
mission made in France, and a few
items from the U.S. One of the big
U.S. manufacturers has plants in 22
countries, and most vehicles these
days can have some parts from most
anywhere.
this Trooper can handle a 5,000
pound lowing load, and one of the
clever ideas was a button which folds
up the outside rear view minors for
going through an automatic car
wash. -
With all the goodies, this one
listed at $34,655.
Improvements for the 1997 Isuzu
Trooper includb a refined power-
steering system, standard 4-wheel
anti-lock brakes and transfer case
refinements. All major parts and
components now carry anti-theft
badging.
Isuzu's proven Trooper is offered
in three model configurations for
1997. Like all Troopers, the "S"
model offers standard driver and
passenger-side air bags, over 90 cu.
ft. of cargo space and 70/30 split rear
doors. Even when equipped with the
"Preferred Equipment" package, the
"S" model is the most affordable
Trooper. Standard equipment in-
cludes air conditioning, cruise con-
trol, dual airbags, 60/40 fold-down
rear scat, power windows and door
locks, a premium 100-watt 6-
speaker AM/FM cassette sound sys-
tem and an anti-theft system.
Exterior enhancements include
Light Silver Metallic overfenders,
spider-style aluminum-alloy
wheels, bright outside door handles
and body-colored door bezels.
The Trooper "LS" expands the
wide range of standard comfort,
convenience and safety features by
adding folding heated electric out-
side mirrors, multi-adjustable
bucket seats, variable intermittent
wipers, map lights, leather-wrapped
steering wheel, cargo rails and rear
scat foot rest.
Complementing the stereo sys-
tem, this one also had a CD player.
Gray velour cloth fabric adorns
seating surfaces and door panels, and
it had an electric ’moonroof.
A bronze windshield with sun
band and bronze privacy glass on
side and rear windows help reduce
glare. Sixteen in. alloy wheels and
245/70R16 mud-and-snow rated
tires are standard.
All Troopers are powered by
Isuzu's all-aluminum 24-value,
SOHC 75-degree, V6 engine rated at
190hp@ ?,600rpmand 188 ftTlbs./
torque @ 4,000 rpm. The engine
features dircc| multi-point fuel injec-
tion which maximizes power, torque
and fuel economy, while limiting
emissions. Trooper's direct, distribu-
tor-less ignition ensures reliable per-
formance and reduces the frequency,
cost and complexity of tune-ups.
Notable is the crankshaft-mounted
magnetic spark sensor which signals
the engine's Electronic Control
Module (ECM) and routes spark to
Isuzu Trooper
individual high-voltage coils. This
system precisely meters spark dura-
tion as well as timing. The result is
better fuel economy, consistent
power and reliable starting.
"Normal,” "Power," or "Winter"
start modes are offered. The "Power"
mode enables upshifts at higher rpm,
maximizing passing or towing
power. The "Winter" mode helps
minimize wheelspin on slippery sur-
faces by engaging the transmission
in third gear, not first. When neither
"Power" or "Winter" is selected, the
transmission operates at normal
range. The automatic transmission is
also equipped with an electronic
torque converter lock-up. Trooper's
"shift-on-the-fly" 4-whccl drive sys-
tem allows for engagement while the
vehicle is in motion.
Four-wheel ventilated disc brakes
and a 4-sensor ABS system are now
standard for every Trooper. When
equipped with trailer brakes,
Trooper's towing capacity is rated up
to 5,000 lbs.
All Trooper models are covered, at
no additional cost, by one of the mo$t
comprehensive warranties avail-
able: 36-month/50,000-mile limited
bumper-to-bumper, 60-month/
60,000-miles limited powertrain and
72-month/100,000-mile rust perfo-
ration warrant. The warranty also
includes 24 hours/365 days-a-year,
60-month/60,000-mile roadside as-
sistance program.
