Wednesdays to become new Social Security check day
For future Social Security benefi-
ciaries, Wednesdays will become
one (if the moat important days in
their lives. It's the day that their
Social Security benefits will be de-
livered, according to Mitchi A.
Weger, manager of the San Antonio
Northwest Social Security office.
"People who apply for benefits
beginning May 1, 1997, will not
receive their benefit an die third of
the month as in the past Instead they
will receive it on a second, third, or
fourth Wednesday of the month,”
Mrs. Weger said. Benefits received
this June will be based on the new de-
livery schedule.
The change is expected to even out
the workflow of the agency by
avoiding the peak of telephone traf-
fic that generally accompanies check
deliveries on the third of the month.
Legal Notices
It is expected to help rednoe tele-
phone waiting times far all callers.
Benefits to current Social Security
beneficiaries will continue to be paid
on die third. Benefits to current and
future Supplemental Security In-
come (SSI) beneficiaries will con-
tinue to be paid on the 1st of the
month.
"When you apply for benefits, the
Social Security representative will
tell you when to expect your benefit
payment The letter we send to you
notifying you of your benefit amount
will also have this information," says
Mrs. Weger.
"The day you receive your bene-
fits will be determined by the birth-
date of the person on whose work
record the benefits are based," says
Mrs. Weger. "This means that
spouses who apply can expect to
receive their benefit based on the
SafilwkwatcFiirsqtai V
the 10th, benefits me paid an the
between lldi and the 20th, benefits
are paid on the third Wednesday, and
far MrthdMea between the 21st and
31st, benefits are paid on the fourth :
Wednesday.
"Adding new benefit payment
days lets Social Security give better
service to you and all other benefici- -
tries and callers," says Mrs. Weger. f
This means your call toour toll-free
number (1-800-772-1213) will be
answered faster and your visit to our
field office will take less time. In :
addition, calls and visits to report
nonreceipt, to question the amount
ofa benefit payment, or to ask about:
other payment-related matters will
be reduced."
