Area gridders sign with colleges Saturday
Last Wednesday was national sign- from Lytle, will eo to Southwest defensive lineman Sr.ntt Sralla d
Last Wednesday was national sign-
ing day for high school seniors re-
ceiving scholarshipswto play college
football. Nine area football players
signed their names to letters of intent.
Included was Devine's 6-3, 275-
pound defensive tackle Robert Riv-
era, who will attend Texas Tech.
Will Davidson, a 6-5, 255-pound
offensive lineman from Pleasanton,
has. signed with Baylor, and Jeff Mil-
ward, a 6-3, 230-pound linebacker
from Lytle, will go to Southwest
Texas State.
Two players from Cole will attend
Texas A&I. Eric Baker, a 190-pound
running back, and Bubba Reggie, a 6-
5, 263-pound defensive tackle will
play for the Javelinas.
Chuck Herndon of Boeme, a 215-
pound LB, is also going to A&I.
Also from the area, two players
from Kerrville Tivy have been
signed, including 6-5, 265-pound
defensive lineman Scott Sralla
(Brigham Young), and J immy Hakes,
a 6-5, 215-pound tight end (Texas).
Crystal City offensive lineman
Manny Martinez, a 6-3,285-pounder,
will go to Southwest Oklahoma State.
Also with a slight Hondo connec-
tion is 6-3,230-pound Churchill tight
end Greg Schorp, who signed with
Texas A&M. Schorp’s father, Louis
Schorp, was an assistant coach in
Hondo for the 1987-88 school year.
Crime Stoppers go countywide
The Devine Crime Stopper chap-
ter recently decided to expand and
cover the entire county after learn-
ing that Medina County Sheriff
Wesley Scott was considering
forming a Crime Stoppers group
for all other areas of the county.
The Devine group covered only the
area within the 663 telephone ex-
change.
By a unanimous vote of the 16-
member hoard, the Devine Chapter
proposed to Sheriff Scott and the
Hondo arid Castroville police de-
partments that we form one group
and add six new board members^
from other areas of the county. The
new organization would become
known as Medina County Crime
Stoppers.
In Sept. 1989, the 71st State Leg-
islature passed Senate Bills No. 85
and No. 149. As a result of the
passing of these bills, the county
courts and the state district courts
may, upon conviction of an indi-
vidual of a felony crime and impos-
ing a probated sentence on the indi-
vidual, will pay a fee not to exceed
$50 to Crime Stoppers chapters in
the county. They may also charge
the felon with repaying to the local
Crime Stopper chapter any rewards
which may have been paid out that
resulted in his conviction. The
forming of one Crime Stoppers
chapter in the county will allow the
Dup to receive all of the state
funds. They, in turn, will be able to
pay bigger rewards. Rewards for
different typesxrf crimes are paid
according to a set schedule, the
Largest award being for an act des-
ignated 'crime of the week,' which
pays $1,000 maximum for a limited
time only.
New officers were elected at the
December meeting. They are Lucy
Kincke, president; Steve Lopez,
vice president; Robert Rivera, sec-
retary, and Clyde Harris, treasurer.
The first full countywide meeting
was held on Jan. 18 with 22 mem-
bers and coordinators present. Co-
ordinators for 1990 are Chief John
De La Cruz, Devine; Doyle Eads,
alternate; Chief Joe Aynesworth,
Hondo; Chief Leonard Crawford,
Castroville; Chief Deputy Jerry
Bailey and Sheriff Wesley Scott.
Application is being made to the
State Advisory Council to be eli-
gible to receive the state funds. The
Devine Area Crime Stoppers com-
piled a very good record for the
five years they have existed and are
looking to bigger and better tilings
as a county wide group.

"Point of Interest"
tour running Mar. 7
The Point of Interest tour pro-
gram has changed names. It will
now be known as "Recreational
Activity" because of the wide range
of places our travelers have visited,
including Garden Ridge Pottery,
Pepper Mill Plaza, River Center
Mall, Ingram Mall, Eagle Pass and
Del Rio.
We must emphasize this is of-
fered on a first-come, first-serve
basis. In the past we have had a
waiting list and we do want every-
one to be happy.
On March 7 we will be going to
Garden Ridge Pottery, to San Anto-
nio to eat, and then back to Hondo
by 5 p.m. We will leave the Hondo
Nutrition Center at 8:30 a.m.
You can sign up at the Hondo
Nutrition Center or call Sue at 426-
2395.

elected at their regular meeting
Thursday, Feb. 22. They are as fol-
lows, Saul Mendoza, president;
Mrs. Guadalupe Torrez, vice presi-
dent; Ramon Garcia, secretary;

The purpose of this committee is
to make elected officials in local

our efforts to advance progress for
all people in Hondo through advo-
cacy, education, political and mass
actions all directed toward the goal
of empowering the people and
achieving self-determination in
Hondo for a better quality of life
for everyone," said Chavel Lopez, a
