The cotton insect situation has
changed very little sinice last
week according to reports re-
ceived from eight different com-
munities. The average Boll
Weovil count "has been 7 per cent
the past two weeks and tho Flea
hopper average has been 14 per
cent both weeks.
Averages don't mean too much
however since tho Flea hopper
count ranged from 5 to 53 hop-
pers per 100 plants examined
and boll weevil cunt ranged from
0 to 22 puntured squares out of
100 examined. .
Personnel from the State
Bureau of Entomology and plant
Quarantine examined 15 differ-
ent fields'in the Granger Taylor
and Thrall communities and
found an average of 14.4 per cent
Flea hopper infestation which
corresponds almost exactly with
that 6f the cotton farmers mak-
ing reports to the County Agent.
Weather conditions were ideal
up to Friday morning for dust
ing and the odor of cotton poison
could be detected in all parts of
the county.

Eight pounds of DDT wettable
powder per 100 gallons of water
are necessary to control Horn
flies on cattle. Previously Ento-
mologists of the A & M College
recommended only half this
amount.
Recent rains will cause the
cattle pests to increase rapidly
and livestock owners are en
couraged to keep the flies under
control. There is a considerable
loss in milk production when
flies are present and treated
beef cattle have gained as much
as one third to one-half pound
more more than untreated ani-
mals during the fly season.
Animals are' protected from
hornflies for ten to fifteen days
when sprayed or dipped with
DDT. Usually twoor three treat-
ments in tho spring andjearly
summer and one treatment in
the fall gives year-round protec-
tion from the hornfly.
For dairy animals in milk pro-
duction use methoxychlor in
place of DDT at the same
strength and apply the same
number of times you would with
DDT.
For additional information on
control of External. Parasites of
Livestock write your County
Agent for a copy of B-158 (1949)
"External Parasites of Live
stock and their Control."
