“We pitched better than I
thought we’d pitch, hit
better than 1 thought we’d
hit, and fielded better than I
thought we’d field.”
Needless to say, Hondo
baseball coach Willie
Frantzen was fairly pleased
with the outcome of last
Friday’s scrimmage with
Uvalde, which the Coyotes
won by the approximate
count of 19-14.
‘They did a good job,” he
continued. “We had five
players who were out for the
first day, and five of our
probable starters haven’t
even come out yet (because
of basketball).”
In the 4 Vi hour, 13 inning
marathon, Hondo used all of
its pitchers that were suited
out, and tested out all of its
fielders, some at more than
one position.
The top three hitters for
the young Owl squad were
Luis Escamilla, Danny
Quintanilla, and Lance
Brucks, who all went 3-for-6
at the plate. Brucks, how-
ever, got the day’s most
noticeable blast, as he
smashed a three-run homer
over the center field fence,
despite a strong north wind.
FYantzen was most im-
pressed with the Owls
defense consistency, and the
team committed only about
three errors in the entire
scrimmage, which is an
excellent showing for the
first outing.
T also thought our main
pitchers threw well, and our
freshmen pitchers showed
some promise,” he added.
The Owls’ scrimmage with
Medina Valley, originally
scheduled for Friday, has
been moved to today
(Thursday) at 4 p.m., to
accommodate the Medina
Valley basketball team
which is still involved in the
playoffs, and has a game set
for Friday.
Hondo has one more
scrimmage set for this week,
as they head up to Boeme on
Monday afternoon, to take
on the Greyhounds.
The season officially gets
underway next Thursday,
March 1, when the Owls take
on St. Gerard’s High School
in the Uvalde Tournament.
Game time for the opening
game is 2:30 p.m. Other
first-round contests include
Pleasanton vs. Del Rio,
Eagle Pass vs. Medina
Valley, and Austin Westlake
vs. Uvalde.
A complete schedule can
be found onpage 9.
Rifle to he given away
A Marlin 30-30 rifle valued
at $170 will be given away
by Wal-Mart to benefit the
Medina Memorial Hospital
Emergency Room Fund.
Wal-Mart Manager
Cameron Davis said that
registration for the drawing
will be held at the store
beginning Friday and run-
ning through the time of the
drawing Saturday. March 3,
or until all tickets are sold.
Complete details concern-
ing the drawing are avail-
able at the store or from any
of Wal-Mart’s associates.::
The drawing will be held
at 2:30 p.m, March 3. iA

WHAT IF... they held a
baseball practice and nobody
came? No, actually they had
already practiced in the
morning. Owl coach Willie
Frantzen though, had to stay
behind with the unenviable
task of watering down the
basepath.
