Tourneys this week...
Golf team hits the links
It’ll be a tale of two teams
when the Hondo golf season
swings its way into action
this week.
The boys’ team will need
to be completely rebuilt this
season, according to head
golf coach Terry Tilley.
“They’re almost all
rookies,” he said. ‘1 think all
of ’em are freshman' or
sophomores, and they don’t
have much experience at
all."
The boys are going
through the qualifying pro-
cess this week, and Tilley
wiU have plenty to cboo6e
from, as there are about a
dozen trying out for the
team. Each week, they wUl
compete for a spot on the
upcoming tournament team,
and five spots will be
available.
Hondo opens up the sea-
son this Friday, when they
host the Hondo Invitational.
Also included on the list of
participants are Eagle Pass,
Devine, Del Rio, Uvalde,
Pearsall, Samuel Clemens,
Randolph, Lackland, and
Medina Valley.
The girls, however, have a
very seasoned squad which
should be quite talented.
Three ietterpersons” from
last year’s team return,
including senior Gina
Woolls, and juniors Cynthia
Clayton and Mary Laughing-
house. Also on the team this
year are juniors Shannon
Gruber and Mylinda Wolff.
“We’re a little shaky on
depth.’ said Tilley, “since we
take five to each tourna-
ment, and there are only five
girls out this vear but «’e
ought to be all right.”

day, when the girls host a
sparse field, consisting (as of
this writing) only of Hondo,
Devine, Pearsall, and Eagle
Pass.
‘There’s a lot of schools
that don’t have enough to year," said Tilley,
field a girls’ golf team this Yes, but Hondo does..

In their final contest of the
season last week at Pearsall,
the Hondo freshmen boys’
defeated the Mavs 49-36, but
the game wasn’t anywhere
near that dose.
Hondo led after three
periods by a 44-18 coun
before a Pearsall rally was
able to chop the Owls’ lead
down to 13 points
Clyde Harris was the only
Owl to reach double figures,
with 10, but Pat Miller, John
Barrios, and Tim Carter
added eight, seven, and six.
The freshman Owls en-
dured a rocky start this
year, and came through in a their final four games, to record,
big way at the end, winning finish with an 11-10 season
