AARP Chapter #2543 met January
6,1994. We had 76 members and 22
guests present.
Our board met and made two rec-
ommendations for the membership
to vote on. We unanimously voted to
discontinue the games party we were
having on the second Wednesday of
every month due to the lack of inter-
est. We also unanimously agreed that
we should donate $ 150 to the city to
defray the cost of utilities for the
center.
We gained three new members this
meeting, Glen and Betty Linnebur of
Castroville and Milton Ormond of
Hondo. We'fe happy to have you join
us.
We will be having a "55 Alive"
class (AARP's version of Defensive
Driving) sometime in the near future.
If you need to be recertified or would
rTike to take this class please call our
president, Edna Nietenhoefer at 426-
2979. You do not need to be a mem-
ber of the local chapter or of AARP,
but you do need to be 50 years old or
older. This course is good for reduc-
tion in your vehicle insurance in
almost every state. This course how-
ever cannot be used to clear traffic
tickets.
We had 20 talented Hondo High
School Students and their director,
Ms Cathy Young on our program.
They sang a medley of Garth Brooks
songs, A whole New World, Lean On
Me and A Dream is Like a River.
They did a wonderful job. We always
enjoy and appreciate having them
perform for us. Thank you so much
for indulging us.
Our next meeting will be on Febru-
ary 5th, 11 a.m. at McDowell Ca-
fetera. It will be our Founder's Day
meeting and luncheon. Plan on
bringing your favorite casserole or
what ever and share it with your fel-
low AARP members. This is a cov-
ered dish luncheon. No one will be
preparing lunch for us.

There is a need for some new mem-

ALL SMILES... Members of the Cecil Atkission Ford sales team are all smiles after they ended the year with
an exceptionally good sales record. "Our 2.9% interest rate advertisement in the Countywide Classified
really paid off," said Manager Clarence McNiel. "It was a very good example of how advertising works. If
you let people know you have a good deal, they will respond to advertising. We closed the year with a real
strong month and helped Ford to beat Chevrolet as the No. 1 truck in the st&te and county. We are one of
the largest diesel truck dealers in the state, even though we're a small town dealership." Sales team
members are (l-r)Bill Rathke.Eric Torres, McNiel, Bill Bippert, Mike Broussard, Larry Schuler, and (not
pictured) Keith Lutz.
REPUBLICAN HOPEFULS... Nine of the eleven local Republican Primary candidates on the Medina
County ballot were at Dairy Queen Thursday morning for U.S. Rep. Henry Bonilla's visit with local
constituents. Pictured (l-r) are Hoyt Gamer, Peggy Schriner, B.A. Bemsen, Greg Delk, May Lathe, State
Rep. Pete Nieto, Marion Taylor and Wayne Vaughn. Not pictured are George Ernst and Charles Rothe.
Lake area residents retain law firm
Ralph Dresser, president of the
Lake Medina Conservation Society
(LAMCOS), has announced that the
LAMCOS has retained San Antonio
attorneys, Seagal V. Wheatley and
Robert Michael Duffey of Wheatley
& Sharpe, L.L.P., to represent the
LAMCOS in its opposition to the
attempt of Bexar-Mcdina-Atascosa
Counties Water Control & Improve-
ment District #1 (BMA) to obtain
approval of the Texas Natural Re-
sources Conservation Commission
(TNRCC) to make commercial sales
of a large quantity of Medina lake
water.
The group is composed of numer-
ous property owners on or near
Medina lake that will be affected by
BMA's attempt to expand its statu-
tory authority that does not presently
include any authority to sel I water for
municipal purposes. Dresser said
that engaging the law firm reflects
the serious concerns that property
owners have over the unjustified
proposal of BMA to change the his-
torical nature of the lake usage after
many years of BMA's non-usage of
the water and the substantial impact
such change will have on the com-
Medina Lake group
to hold public
meeting Monday
Lake Medina Conservation Soci-
ety (LAMCOS) has retained the law
firm of Wheatley and Sharpe to rep-
resent their lake-area membership in
the on-going hearings on amending
the current water rights held by
Bexar-Medina-Atascosa Water
Control and Improvement District
No. 1 (BMA) conducted by the Texas
Natural Resource Conservation
Commission.
BMA seeks to change its current
irrigation water rights to allow for the
sale of its waters for municipal, in-
dustrial and irrigation usage.
The LAMCOS organization will
hold a public meeting at 7 p.m.,
Monday, Jan. 17, at the Lakehills
Civic Center on Park Road 37. The
public is invited to attend.
LAMCOS officials will give a
brief explanation of how and why (he
organization was formed, what they
have accomplished so far and what
their goals will be.
Procedures and protocol for the
TNRCC meeting, which will be held
at the Taft H igh School auditorium in
San Antonio Jan. 24,6 p.m., will also
be discussed. TNRCC is holding its
first preliminary hearing at this time.

munities in the lake area.
Wheatley added that "BMA's pro-
posal to sell water from Medina Lake
beyond irrigation use is an irrational
approach to the area's water resource
planning. Numerous studies and liti-
gation have moved Texas and this
area to plan a comprehensive water
allocation for the long-term stability
of this valuable resource." BMA's
attempt to sell water that will only
increase development pressures in
the Edwards Recharge area ahead of
planning is a poor way to allocate this
resource. c
"We will ask the State not to permit
such water sales from Medina Lake
until the comprehensive plans and
Edward Aquifer Spring Augmenta-
tion currently being conducted by
TWDB are complete and the needs of
all citizens in the area can be consid-
ered, and not to approve BMA’s
obvious efforts to get out of the gate
before the region’s total water needs
are determined and allocated. We
will attend the TNRCC hearing on
January 24,1994 in San Antonio."
