Tapia contributed two IDs to his team's 21-
6 victory, including a crucial interception
return in the second quarter, and an 8-yard
scoring run in the final period. Now 7-3 on
the year, Hondo enters the state playoffs for
the 34th time, with a bi-district clash at
home against 28-A.AA champion Pearsall.

On paper, at least, it really didn't
matter how the Hondo Owl football
team performed against Southside.
Their hopes of making the playoffs
rode on the backs of another team
playing in a game 20 miles away.
The Randolph Ro-Hawks needed
to defeat the Medina Valley
Panthers for the Owls to entertain
any real hopes of making the 1986
playoffs.
As it turned out. Randolph won
its game. 21-6.
And just for good measure, the
Owls won theirs by the same score,
21-6, over the Cardinals.
The win takes Hondo's season
record to 7-3, with a 4-1, second-
place mark in District 27-A A A, and

this Friday night at Barry Field,
they'll face an old foe in the Pearsall
Mavericks in a bi-district battle.
The Mavericks won their big
game last Friday, 28-12, over
Devine, to win the title in 28-A.AA.
Kickoff time for Friday night is 8
p.m., with a radio rebroadcast set
for Saturdav morning at 8:05, on
KRME. 1460 AM.
Southside, in last week's game,
gave the Owls all they could handle.
In fact, it looked at times as if the
Cardinals were in control of the ball-
game. even if they were trailing on
the scoreboard.
The Cardinals set new season-
high marks for Hondo opponents in
three offensive categories: First
Downs (20); Passing Yardage (157);
and Total Yardage (322). Southside
also never punted.
It prompted Owl coach Butch
Porter to say what he'd said all
along.
"They're the best 2-7 team you're
going to find."
Fortunately for the Owls, the
Hondo offense was able to move the
football better than it had since the
Fredericksburg game.
Hondo had two long drives for
touchdowns, and got a big 95-vard
interception return by sophomore
defensive back Steve Tapia just
before halftime.
The Cardinal offense opened the
game with a drive of 40 yards,
before Mark Wander missed wide
and short on a 47-yard field goal
attempt.
Hondo turned right around and
put together one of its more impres-
sive drives of the season, by
marching "0 yards in ten plays for
the score.
Lee Ray Quintanilla got his first
career TD with a four-yard sweep
around right end. It came with 3:50
left in the first quarter. Beau Van
L>e Walks extra point made the
score 7-0.
On the drive, the big play was a
l~-yard completion to Ramon
Bernal, which had a late hit penalty
added to the end of the play. It gave
the Owls a fisrt downs at the 18.
Southside came back with ano-
ther strong drive, moving 4o yards
behind die running of fullback
Edward DeWitt and the throwing of
Michael Gutierrez.
But the drive stalled after a pair
of incompletions at the Hondo 29.
One of the passes was batted away
by John Collins.
Hondo put together its second
long drive of the half, by moving
to the Cardinals' 33, but things
didn't stan out looking so great
With a 2nd-and-l8 from the 20,
Southside lineman Ricky Ortega
sacked Hondo QB Paul Gonzales at
the 13. On the next play, Gonzales
went deep, and found split end Tim
Carter, who hauled the pass in over
his left shoulder at midfield.
Then, with a 4th-and-2 at the
Southside 41. Gonzales kept for six
yards and a first down.
A holding penalty backed up the
Owls again, so that an 18-vard
completion to Craig Weynand on
third down only brought up a 4th-
and 8. and the Owl drive stalled.
Southside looked for all the
world that it would drive in for a
touchdown as the first half began to
wind down, as Gutierrez connected
with Wander on two passes for 17
yards each Wander ended the game
with eight catches for 91 yards, and
those two took the Cards to the 21.
But Southsides roof caved in
three plays later. And the
momentum swung the other way.
Gutierrez rolled to his right on a
lst-and-goal at the 8. and looked
back to his left to throw a screen
hack to Wander.
Neither Cardinal ever saw Steve
Tapia. That is, until he had intercep-
ted the pass and was on his way to
a 95-yard TD return.
The score came with 1:04 left in
the half, and put the Owls up 14-0.
which, coincidentally. was ihe same
score by which Randolph led M.V.
1 lon.do. w hh entered the regular-
season finale with no pi unis scores
in the third quarter all season, left
just as it had entered. It’s now been
12 games since the Owls scored in
a third period.
The Owls did get one intercep-
tion. when Quintanilla picked off a
pass near midfield, and they also
stopped a Southside drive on downs
near the same point.
But to end a pair of possessions,
Hondo had tossed a pair of intercep-
tions. which were hauled in by Fer-
nando Garcia and Alfred Martinez.
The latter pickoff set up what
looked to be another scoring drive.
Key runs by Gutierrez and Wander
took the hall down to the 4-yard
line.
Wander was stopped for nothing
on first down. DeWitt plowed ahead
tor 3 yards on second down. Gutier-
rez was stopped on third down, and
on fourth down (the first play of the
fourth quarter), the quarterback mis-
handled the snap, and Quintanilla
finally recovered foi the Owls at the’
"-yard line.
The Owls then embarked on a

i Kveryhodv who thought the Hondo Owls had no chance ot
reaching the playutts this year, raise cm up high.
Now, 1 must admit that hack when t> 0 scores were Being
turned m against Handera and Somerset, the prospect of
busting into the football playoffs didn't seem like the easiest
'project in the world, hut it was one that, with enough
perseverence, could he tackled.
Fortunately, the guys in Blue persevered
And like that, the Hondo Owls are in the state football
playoffs for the B4th time, extending the state record they
already own Hut there's had news for all you Hooters and
Hootettes out there Wichita Falls, the »2 team on the list,
stayed right with Hondo, by making it to the playoffs again
this year for the 32nd time.
Now, this all brings us hack to the situation 1 tried to bring
out into the open a couple of years hack, hut no one would listen
to me. It's mv contention that Hondo has made the playoffs Bn
times. "
Detractors of this theory say that zone playoffs don't count,
and way hack there somewhere, Hondo lost a zone playoff
game or two, so the actual count is only 33 as of last Friday.
One of those mistaken years w as quickly remedied In 193b,
Hondo won its zone, then heat Del Rio, 14-13. for the District
3)1 B title. A scoreless tie (lost on penetrations) with Carrizo
Springs kept Hondo from advancing any further, hut that
game was at the hi district level, so it has to count as a playoff
appearance, right.’
The other year in question is 1940, when Hondo went 8 1
during the regular season, and then tied Pearsall, 7-7, in a zone
playoff The Mavericks advanced to hi district, hut why is
Hondo deprived of an appearance in the playoff's?
I he Owls sailed through a six team zone without a blemish,
with jjasy wins over Devine. Brackettville, I'valde, Del Rio,
and Sabinal. How is that any different from winning a six
team district?
Whoever decides such matters (the I'll., I suppose) needs to
he taken to task over this triviality.
Hut then again, who's to say that Wichita Falls hasn't lost 10
or 12 zone playoff games? Then they'd he getting the lead hack
What Hondo really needs to do is make the playoffs for about
another ten years in a row, just to put the record out of reach.
And it sure would keep things fun around here.
Way to go, guys. Heat Pearsall.
