Coach Rushing did their |ob on the
ensuing kickoff, when kody Dunn
and Isaac Ruiz trapped Simon Briseno
at the 8. Unable to move, the Wild-
cats punted. Jesse Rushing fielded the
kick at the 38, avoided a pair of tack-
lers and raced around the left side to
the 17. The Owls got an extra five
yards on a defensive penalty. From
the 12, Williams got half the distance,
then iiackcbcd went in from the 6,

extra point was wide right.
Carrizo drove to Hondo territory,
but on 3rd-and-3 at the 38, Martinez
was sacked by Matt Coyle, who had
a team-leading 14 tackles, and Brian
Cosgrove, forcing a punt.
I londo took over w ith 4:33 left and
needed to drive 92 yards for a game-
winning I D. That opportunity disap-
peared. On first down, Hackebeil
broke into the secondary for a long
gainer. He was wrapped up hy one
defender, when another hit him and
the ball popped into the air. Sifuentez
grabbed it and raced 22 yards for a
Carrizo Springs touchdown.
Gorrick's kick put the Wildcats back
ahead. 27-20.
"At that point.” Coach Rushing
said. "I thought, 'Well... we still have
to score a touchdown, and we'll have
better starting field position.”
Williams was a step away from
breaking the kickoff return, but was
tripped up at the 25. Williams carried
for 11 yards on first down, but the
Owls soon faced a 3rd-and-13. A
screen pass to Williams made it 4th-

option keeper to the right, picking up
the first down at the 50. Overley
found McWilliams open over the
middle for a 24-yard gain, and on the
next play. Williams broke free for a
26-yard touchdown run. Taylor's kick
tied the game w ith 1:46 left.
Carrizo wasn’t through yet. Rush-

Both teams sport identical records,
at 2-4 for the year and I -0 in District
29 AAA. While Hondo is coming off
its 34-33 overtime thriller over
Carrizo Springs, the Javelmas erupted
in the second half, turning a one-point
lead over Fearsall into a 40-12 romp.
Cry stal City hasn't reach postseason
play since 1953. but folks in Zavala
County are hoping that the 49-year
exile ends this year. A w in over three-
time defending district champ Hondo
would obviously provide a big boost.
“They have a lot of returning per-
sonnel. and it's a lineup with a lot of
seniors-six starters on offense and
sev cn on defense." said Hondo Coach
Jack Rushing. " They came close to
making the playoffs last year and
they 're very capable of getting there
this time around.”
The talent starts with senior run-
ning back and linebacker Arturo
Guerrero, a 205-lb. battering ram.
Tie's the heart of their offense and
their defense." Coach Rushing said.
"He runs hard and hits hard "
The quarterback is senior Jesse

"They 'll run an unbalanced line,

Coach Rushing said. "They sprint

fore the defense has time to adjust.
It's something you have to work on a
lot in practice 'ton have to be disci-

On defense, besides Guerrero, jun-
ior Dav id Delgado is their other starter
at linebacker. The Javelmas employ
an active five-man Iront. with Cuellar
at the nose. Luna and Dominic
McHazlett at the tackles and Randy
Ramon and Jesse Juarez at the ends.
"Cry stal City is a phy sical, strong,
quick football team. "Coach Rushing
says. "They 're getting our full atten-
tion this week.
"We've been getting better each
week, and we've got to keep getting
better to get where we want to be.”
OWL SCREECHES
• Hondo had never won an over-
time game prior to last Friday In two
prev ions tries, both at Barry Field, the
Owls dropped OT decisions to
Fearsall in 1998 and to La Vemia-in
double overtime-in 2001. Those two
losses served as bookends to a 12-
game home winning streak.
• It had also been awhile since
Hondo last won a game decided by
seven points or fewer. Go all the way
back to Week 4 of the 1994 season,
when the Owls topped Dillev. 15-13
at Barry Field. In Hondo's 55 victo-
ries since that game, the Owls had
always won by eight or more points.
• A little more digging was neces-
sary to find the last time Hondo had
overcome a 14-point deficit to win a
game. How about Week 7 of the 19SS
season’ The Owls trailed
Fredericksburg 21-7 with four min-
utes left in the game and scored twice
late, including the last TD and game-
winning two-point conversion with
just 15 seconds left, to win. 22-21.
• Just how close was the Carrizo
Springs game last week ’
