production, I would like to
say this:
I find it rather ironic and
perhaps even hypocritical
that a people who display a
rabid passion for the some-
times bloody and broken
bones violence of a high
school football game would
cringe in horror if the
so-called pure, cute, and
dean drama department
dares to take a step in using
the same blood and guts as
a legitimate part of a pro-
duction.
Now, the author of last
week’s letter would pro-
bably say, “But in a football
game violence is unavoid-
able whereas in drama it
can be left out." Howtrue.lt
could be left out in drama.
But I doubt if the people
who take the time and toil
to memorize lines, develop
characterizations, etc., care
to restrict themselves to
pure, cute and clean pro-
ductions. They like to put a
little realism into the act
now and then.
Even your more classic
plays (such as those by
Shakespeare) are not with
out blood. It was not for-
bidden back in the early
seventeenth century so
why should it be now? For
most sports, violence is
acceptable, but let the
drama department touch it
and it’s GASP! HORROR!
SHOCK!!!

Breaking the taboos that
hinder the effectiveness
And scope of the high school
theatre should be viewed as
a triumph rather than a
"disappointment."The next
step to be taken, however,
is to be sure that any such
so-called controversial
scenes are depicted with
good taste and integrity in
mind just as I believe they
were last Saturday night.
The purpose of this
year's play was to convey
the problems of teenagers
in dealing with parents and
authorities, a very relevant
theme to the people who
were putting on the pro-
duction. Violence was a
necessary and integral part
of the plot just as it is a part
of the grid-iron competi-
tions. Tne action scenes
depicting bodily injury
were not there for the sake
of shocking the audience,
but rather to help the
theme come alive realisti-
cally.
For the sake of turn-
about fair-play (pardon the
double pun there), I would
like to see a letter to the
editor next Fall protesting
the "senseless violence” of
the football games every
Friday night.
Yours even more
digustedly than last week's
"disappointed,"

LET’S ALL CRY
...together for the poor souls in
California who are having to wait
in long lines at the gas pumps.
Isn’t it funny, as the old saying
goes, how "the chickens come
home to roost."
Those Californians who are
crying about a gas shortage are
among the very same Californians
who have refused to allow the
building of a pipeline across their
state because it might harm their
precious ecology. The pipeline
would extend to Midland, Texas
and transport Alaskan oil aorosi
the country to Texas refineries.
But Californians "have spoken”,
including, their great leader “Anti-
Nuke, r I-don’t-know-Linda-
Ronstadt" Jerry Brown.
I say let them feel the same
pinch that most of the country is
feeling,. Perhaps shortages and
long lines will wake them up to the
fact their environmental hogwash
has to take a lower priority for the
benefit of the entire nation.
Now, President Carter wants
his stooge Schlesinger to “make a
study" to see why there is a
shortage of gas in California. Man,
talk about trying to harvest
political hay, that takes the cake,
for Mr. Carter just happened to be
in California at the time on a
“non-political”, political visit.
Service stations right here in
Hondo are having to close on
weekends or ration^as to custom-
ers. Some are out of gas for days.
It is happening in San Antonio. It’s
happening in other parts of the
nation. Why not take a long look at
the problem as a whole, Mr.
President? Don’t continue to play
politics with our energy problems.
A PUBLIC INVITATION
...has been extended for the
Women’s Conservation Tour
which gets underway at 9 a.m.
Tuesday in Yancey.
The tour includes some interest-
ing stops [see story] and winds up
at Hondo City Park for a barbecue
and style show. Now, eating and
watching women are great exer-
cises even for the men, so you
can’t beat this tour with a long
stick. And the best thing is that
it’s free.
OLD FRIENDS
...are everywhere it seems. Only
this week we received a Rockport
newspaper from the former
Undine Bales, now Mrs. Percy
Shingler. She had this to say in her
note which accompanied the
paper:
“Here is an area newspaper
with story and pictures of the
Hondo couple that were involved
in a serious accident. I was
impressed with the help and
concern of area people.
"It is a shame that this is so
confusing to drivers. The roads
cross-over and inter-sect like a
cr088-word puzzle.
“I once worked for Bill Berger at
the Hondo Anvil Herald and with
Sally Brucks and Edna McDade.”
Thanks Mrs. Shingler. I’m sure
Bill Berger, Sally and Sis all
remember you. And inddentlv.
Bill still owns the Anvil Herald. He
just tolerates me editing it for
him.
I know what you mean about the
roads in that area. I used to travel
that very road several times a
week to Corpus Christi when I was
publishing the County Press in
Refugio.
TAKING THE VICE
...out of some things could be
termed a good deed. But when you
eliminate it from the front of a
title, then you have made a
mistake. Last week I did just that
in my story on the new Inter-
governmental Council formed in
our county. Lloyd Hardt is vice
chairman of the group but you
would never know it by my story,
for I took all the vice out of his
position. Leon Tschirhart is
chairman.
I AM AGAINST
...the petition which the Hondo
Chamber of Commerce is circulat-
ing opposing SB 1208, a bill which
would grant authority to the
Texas Railroad Commission to
approve [or disapprove] intra-
state service by United - Parcel
Service.
My main opposition rests not in
the purpose of the petition, but,
rather, in the wording of tho
petition. First it says the
“membership" of the Chamber
opposed. I question that all the 278
members of the Hondo Chamber of
Commerce have been given the
opportunity to hear an explanation
of the petition so they might
oppose or support it.
It also states that “UPS verbally
stated to the RRC regular routes
would be unprofitable.” Who
heard UPS make this statement?
Did one of the RRC staff tell the
Hondo Chamber of Commerce
officials this statement was made?
No, I expect representatives of
TEX-PACK, a common carrier
opposing any intra-state routes for
UPS, told our Chamber officials.
Maybe it was made, but unless we
heard it personally 1 don’t think
we should be sending signed
petitions to our representative and
senator based on hear-say.
