La Vernia - In a battle filled with
big plays, the La Vernia freshman
football team scored four times on,
plays of more than 50 yards, routing
the Hondo freshmen, 35-6.
The freshman Owls’ home opener
is today (Thursday) against Uvalde.
Game time at Barry Field is 5 p.m.
Next Thursday, the freshmen will
host Medina Valley.
Thursday at Bear Stadium, La Ver-
nia piled up 339 yards of offense,
while the Owls’ only highlight with the
ball came after the Bears' first touch-
down. William Roberts fielded the
kickoff on a bounce, slipped through
a gap in LV’s downfield coverage, and
/Domed 90 yards up the visitors’ side-
line for the game-tying score.
The Bears, however, responded
quickly, taking only one play to re-
claim the lead for good. After the
Owls’ kickoff, wingback Joey Low
broke free for a 56-yard run on a
counter. Robert Rios’two-point con-
version run put LV up. 14-6 with 1:54
left in the first quarter.

three possessions as well, on a seven-
yard pass from Jake Robbins to
Travis Hild and a 64-yard strike from
Robbins to Keith Ebner, to make the
count 28-6 at halftime.
In the third quarter, LV needed
only one play again to increase its
lead. Rios’ took the ball 54 yards on
a sweep left with 6:32 left in the third
period, to make the score 35-6.
To get the scoring started, Robbins
connected with Jason Hajek on a
slant pass that turned into a 52-yard
catch and run.
Robbins was 3-for-5 through the
air, for 123 yards. All three comple-
tions went for touchdowns.
For the Owls, Oscar DeLuna was
the leading ground gainer, picking up
59 yards on nine carries.
Defensively, Adam Ozgo blocked
the Bears’ only punt attempt and re-
covered a La Vernia fumble. Also,
Brian Cosgrove came up with a stop
on a La Vernia 4th-and-2 running
attempt in the third quarter.

trouble with the Redskins, then write
“Dallas” in the 16-point line. But if
you're faced with a game such as
Cincinnati at Tennessee, where you
may have no clue, put it in the I -point

The D’ Hanis Cowboys could have
easily let the Center Point Pirates
walk away with a romp on Saturday
night. Down 21-0 at halftime, one
could have assumed that Center
Point was going to win big. And one
would have assumed wrong. The
scrappy Cowboys came back strong
in the second half, before finally fall-
ing to the older and larger Pirates,
21-16, in the 1999 season opener.
The Cowboys will travel to Brack-
ettville to meet a strong Tiger team
Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers are
coming off a 42-7 win over Sabinal.
The Cowboys began their second
half comeback with what looked to
be a certain mistake, a squib kick-
off. Catching the Pirates by surprise,
freshman Marcus Gonzalez covered
the kick, giving D'Hanis possession
on the CP 43. For the next eight
plays, quarterback Reid Redden, and
backs Danny Rothe and Harris
Schlortt looks turns carrying the ball
to the 16. Facing 4th-and-5, Redden
handed to Rothe, who rumbled in
through the line to paydirt. Redden
then passed to Rothe for a two-point
conversion, giving the Cowboys new
life, trailing, 21-8 with four minutes
gone in the second half.
After the score. Center Point
fumbled on the Cowboy 46. Redden
recovered, but the next pass found
Randy Flach, who intercepted for CP,

returning it 50 yards to the 17. On
lst-and-goal at the 7, Center Point
was ready to score, but Redden stole
it back, intercepting John Jay's pass.
The Cowboys faced a 3rd-and-11.
Redden passed to Schlortt who made
the catch 20 yards up the left side-
line and then went the remainine 60
yards in a sprint for the second Cow-
boy TD with 4:33 left in the third
quarter. The snap attempt was high
and the scramble for the two failed,
leaving the score at 21 -14.
On the next series, the Pirates had
their longest sustained drive of 12
plays. On lst-and-goal at the 9, off-
setting penalties erased a score. Sergio
Vasquez batted away a pass to the end-
zone. and on fourth down. Jay handed
off to Flach, but the Cowboy defense
dropped him at the line of scrimmage.
The Cowboys were unable to gain
any yardage and punted away.
CP faced numerous Cowboy defen-
sive threats. Josh Herrmann and Red-
den pressured Jay into incompletions,
Eric Cameron sacked Jay, and the Pi-
rates punted on 4th-and-22.
The teams then traded turnovers,
as Flach grabbed a D’Hanis pass and
Vasquez recovered a CP fumble.
From midfield, the Cowboys
moved forward on completions of
five yards to Schlortt, ten to Danny
Rothe, and 25 to Herrmann, setting
up the Cowboys with a first down at
the 13. Fatigue and mistakes took
their toll and the Cowboys were
stopped short.
In the final seconds, the Pirates
took an intentional safety, making the
score 21-16, to preserve the win.
The Cowboys had started with a
ground attack, as Rothe, Herrmann,
and Schlortt put together short gain-
ers to move the Cowboys to the Pi-
rate 40. Facing 4th-and-inches,
Rothe surged forward for the appar-
ent first down, but an unfavorable
spot turned the ball over to CP.
Going with a strong wind. Jay hit
the first of his nine completions on
the night. Austin Allen's catch put the
Pirates a midfield. Two plays later,
Michael Rothe tipped away Jay’s
pass. Facing 4th-and-3, Jay threw
left, but Brandon Wiemers came up
with the interception, setting up the
Cowboys on the CP 35.
On 3rd-and-l, Redden gained a
first down. A fumble on the next play
was saved by the first of two con-
secutive offside calls on the Pirates,
moving the Cowboys across mid-
field. Forced to punt three plays later,
the first snap went way over the head
of Lance Rothe, but another penalty
gave the Cowboys a second chance.
The second snap also went over
Rothe’s head, and he was smothered
on the Cowboy 9-yard line. The Pi-
rates took the gift and scored imme-
diately, on a pass from Jay to Siddig
Frazier. Greg Mahler added the PAT
for a 7-0 lead at the end of a quarter.
Rattled, the Cowboys were unable
to move, and were again forced to
punt. Deji) vu nearly took over as
Rothe struggled to control the high
snap, but managed to punt it away
to midfield. Taking it from the 49,
Jay turned on the speed and made his
way to the Cowboy 22. From the 14,
Jay handed off to Flach for the sec-
ond score. Mahler added the PAT,
and with 6:45 left in the half, the
Cowboys were down, 14-0.
Again the Cowboys were unable
to convert after two incompletions,
had to punt again.
From the 46, Jay passed to Frazier
for 13 yards. Herrmann, Nathan
Dubberly, Cameron, Schlortt, and
Gonzalez’s aggressive defense, com-
bined with Sergio Vasquez’s sack on
Jay, stalled the Pirate drive momen-
tarily. On 4th-and-7, Jay handed off
to Flach, who took it 17 yards for the
third Pirate score. Mahler again
added the PAT, and the Pirates had
taken a 21-0 halftime lead.
