Hondo gets the first one
interceptions key
to Owls ’ victory

Picking up right where he left off
in 1998, Hondo senior Chad Crow-
ell intercepted three passes Friday
night, including two inside the Hon-
gdo 5-yard line, to help the Owls to a
Reason-opening 17-7 win over La
^Vernia at Barry Field.
^ With the Owls’ first win in one of
iSheir shortr rivalries (five meet-
ings), they'll now take their 1-0
Record into a matchup with their old-
est foe. Hondo and Uvalde will
^tangle for the 83rd time this Friday
“at 7:30 p.m., in Uvalde’s Honey
Jowl. The game will be aired live
•Jon KCWM, AM 1460, beginning at
15. The Coyotes won their season
opener Friday, 17-0, over Fox Tech.
Two of Crowell’s interceptions
stopped La Vernia scoring threats,
and the other set up Hondo’s first TD
imarch, which ended with Crowell
firing a 9-yard pass to Nick Finger.
“Chad had a big game,” said Hon-
Stlo coach Jack Rushing, “and we’re
^Obviously pleased with that. It went
long way toward helping us win.”
5$: The coach was a little concerned
«over the team’s first-half perfor-
mance. “I thought we pressed a little
£in the first half. On defense, we’d
-•Stop them for two downs and then
3give up a long-yardage first down.
^And on offense, we were 6-of-13
“Hirough the air for the game. That’s
not where we need to be.
“But,” he added, “La Vernia is a
solid, well-coached team. They can
make things happen, and came up
with some big plays on both sides of
the ball.”
§ La Vernia appeared to have things
5 going their way on the first drive of
jgj| (he game, as quarterback Travis
§ Haba and tailback Chip Adams led
the Bears to the Hondo 13 in nine
p plays. But as Haba tried to throw into
t traffic, Crowell stepped in at the 3-
t yard line to record his first pickoff
3 of the year, returning it to the 17.

Hondo had one first down on a 20-
yard run by Ernie Tapia, who fin-
ished the game with a career high
176 yards on 25 carries, but the drive
soon stalled, and Crowell’s booming
51-yarjl punt went for a toughback.
Hondo’s defense picked things up
on the Bears second possession.
Blake Halbardier dropped Adams for
a four-yard loss on first down. Tim
Leal batted away a pass and Josh
Decker stopped Derrick Haese for no
gain, forcing a punt.
Finger grabbed a Crowell pass to
put the Owls at the La Vernia 12, but
a procudure penalty against Hondo
and a defensive stop by linebacker
Kyle Koepp forced Hondo to try a
25-yard field goal. L.ayne
Neumann’s attempt was wide right,
and the game remained scoreless.
After another Hondo defensive
stand, the Owls began driving on
offense again This time, the team

83 MEETINGS AND COUNTING
: Owls, Coyotes renew rivalry Friday at Honey Bowl
| By Jeff Berger
Anvil Herald Sports Editor
f It’s not just your ordinary high
g school rivalry.
jjjl Very few in the state of Texas have
§1 been renewed more frequently,
g And over the years, it has usually
* involved two pretty good teams.
& Hondo and Uvalde will battle for
Sdhe 83rd tintp this Friday, when the
teams go heati-to-head in Uvalde’s
Honey Bowl. Game time is 7:30, with
a 7:15 air time on KCWM, AM 1460.
This year, both teams come into
Friday’s game off of wins, with Hon-
*3o having beaten La Vernia, 17-7,
and Uvalde topping Fox Tech, 17-0.
The Owls, who own an all-time
41-38-3 edge in the series, will be
looking for a second straight win
over Uvalde, after winning 21-7 last
year at Barry Field, to snap a seven-
game losing streak to the Coyotes.
Hondo is also searching for its first
win in Uvalde in 18 years.
History is one thing, but Friday's
game is in the present, and Hondo
coach Jack Rushing knows that
^Jvalde has a pretty potent attack.
“The Coyotes won a big game
over Fox Tech,” he said, “and they
should have some momentum.”
Last year, when the Coyotes went
3-7, they were still learning the sys-
tem of head coach Bob Loomis. Now
that system is in place.
‘Their quarterback Brad Moore is
a game-breaker,” says Coach Rush-
ing. “He had a long touchdown run
that he just improvised. We have to
contain him, along with a couple of
strong backs (wingback Tyler Collier
and fullback Tyson Griffin)."
The Coyotes usually run out of a
double slot offense with one back.
Uvalde also has plenty of size in
the defensive front. ’Their two tack-
les (Joe Cantu and Manuel Ayala) are
huge.” Cantu weighs 305 and Ayala
is 245. Defensiveend ZachrGugliotti
is a returning All-District performer.
Defensively, Uvalde likes to bring
the house. Often, the Coyotes will
rush as many as eight men, leaving
little time for an opposing offense’s
play to develop.
“They like to stop the run and force
you to throw the ball,” said Coach
Rushing, who says the keys to a
Hondo victory are ball control and
not allowing the big play.
“It’s going to be a chess game,”
he added. “We’ll try to take advan-
tage of anything they give us.”
OWL SCREECHES
• Ernie Tapia's 175-yard rushing
total was the highest single-game ef-
fort by a Hondo running back since
opening night of 1997, when Charlie
Arcos tore up Pearsall for 247 yards.
• Chad Crowell was named San
Antonio Express-News Defensive
Player of the Week for his three-in-
terception night against La Vernia.
Over the past 12 years, there
haven't been a whole lot of players
for Hondo who have had *hree inter-
ceptions in a season. Crowell, how-
ever, has done it three times. He had
eight in 1998 and four in 1997, both
of which led the team. Others: Ryan
Wiemers (4 in ’96), Jonathan Aken
(4 in ’94). Mik>Quititanilla(4 in ’92),
Jimmy Gonzales (3 in ’92), Oscar
DeLeon (8 in ’90), Grady Carlson (5
in ’90), Ernest Gaitan (3 in ’90), and
Bruce Kotzur (4 in ’88).
That’s a good stopping point, be-
cause Kotzur had the Owls’ last three-
pickoff game, against Sonora in 1988.
• With the win over La Vernia, the
Owls’ longest “ofer” has been erased.
Hondo got its first win in five tries
against the Bears Friday, to bring the
series standings to 1-3-1.
Hondo still has a pair of 0-3 series
records, however. One is Dripping
Springs, which beat the Owls three
times in a one-year span (1996-97)
by a total of 11 points. Hondo is also
0-3 against St. Anthony, but the
teams haven’t played since 1921.
• New Braunfels and Seguin have
played each other somewhere around
85 times, and they claim to have the
longest running rivalry in the state.
Hondo and Uvalde aren’t far behind,
having met 82 times heading into this
weekend. Although, official records
are kind of hard to come by in the
early days of Hondo football, and
since Hondo and Uvalde didn’t have
too many other opponents to choose
from during the 1910s, they could
have played each other a few more
times than were documented.
