At Monday s council meet-
ing. City Manager Robert
I let rera asked Chief of Mice
julinny Martinez to address
council regarding a spate of
criminal activity and home
invasions in the city. The bur-
gianes took place over the
curse of the last month.
Ivvo of the suspected home
Inn glars have been arrested,
tie King several cases. Police
believe they know the third
suspect. In fact, the police in-
u stigators questioned the
person they believe is the sus-
pect on Tuesday.
After being called to the po-
dium by the city manager, the
chief said. "In the last week in
J' ik we had a little rash of home ■
in * aons. We were fortunate
cti' ugh to break up the bur-
gl.i v ring as the result of a traf-
l stop by Officer Brian

evidence. We are working dili-
gently with the sheriff's de-
partment on these efforts. We
believe these arrests will stop
the rash of robberies and
hope more arrests will follow."
Martinez said the city man-
ager had called him earlier
Monday to check on the pro-
gress of the burglary investiga-
tion. "I told him 1 was booking
someone. So if you see me out
in the field, it's probably be-
cause I'm booking (the third
suspect),” said the chief. “We
have been very successful at
this. The traffic stops we have
been making have been very
valuable to us and, because of
those stops, we were able to
make these arrests.”
The chief said he wanted
members of the community
to know the Hondo Police De-
partment has been proactive
in the course of their daily
duties by making traffic stops
on suspicious vehicles and
following leads developed
during those stops.
“The traffic stops have
proven to be a very effective
way to develop leads in these
and other cases," he said.
“It is nice to hear the re-
sults,” said Mayor |im Danner.
‘I've heard for a long time
about the number of burglar-
ies we have and the lack of
solutions, so it is nice to hear
about your activity."
“I assure you we will do every-
thing we can with what we have
to work with," said the chief. On
Tuesday afternoon, Martinez
said investigators were interro-
gating their third suspect and
the chief said he believed the
person would soon confess.
On a related note. Martinez
said he was working to smooth
out anticipated traffic flow
problems when the new
school year begins. The Hondo
Independent School District
resumes classes on Tuesday.
“I have met with the super-
intendent, assistant Superin-
tendent and principals both
at Meyer Elementary and
Woolls Intermediate," he said.
"We are working on another
project for the traffic prob-
lems we anticipate when
school starts. We are working
real well with them.
"That is where we are right
now," said the chief. “Every-
body is excited and we plan to
keep on going."

this happen.[D'Hanis teach-

y’all!)
FOR ANYONE who may be
wondering just how EXACTLY
the New Teacher Luncheon
came to be, I’ve got your an-
swer. It a!! started in the Sum-
mer of '98 when then-Super-
intendent Doug Coleman
suggested to Chamber mem-
ber Rita Vance that something
should be done in an effort to
fully welcome new teachers to
our Hondo and D’Hanis
schools and show them just
how much they are really ap-
preciated. After all, the Cham-
ber is here to help the com-
munity and what's more im-
portant than the education of
our youth? AND since the lun-
cheon would be a function of
the Educational Committee
(of which Rita was and still is
the head), who better than her
to help him get his little
project underway! So came to
be the New Teacher Lun-
cheon, an event where spon-
sors treat new teachers and
administrators to lunch and
bags of goodies in a good oT
God’s Country “WELCOME
HOME" fashion and then
continue to follow, up with
their teachers throughout the
year by taking them to lunch
and being on hand to help
and/or answer any questions
their teachers may have. The
results have been no less than
successful with new teachers,
both seasoned and green
alike, feeling more welcomed
by the community than ever
before-not to mention the
life-long FRIENDSHIPS that
have been made as well! In
fact, teacher/sponsor partici-
pation has been such a BIG
HIT (especially with Hondo
alumni) that now we have to
have SEPARATE luncheons
for Hondo and D'Hanis-HOW
COOL!!! In the end, the New
Teacher Luncheon has be-
come a most important event
that shows new teachers just
how grateful we are to have
them on board and encour-
ages them to go above and
beyond the call of duty. It’s the
LEAST we can do for our edu-
cators of tomorrow’s leaders
and we look forward to doing
it for years to come!

In response to a question
about the fire which con-
sumed all but one corner of
the twb-story World War II
barracks at the Medina
County Museum grounds,
Martinez said he had received
some tips from Crime Stop-
pers and community mem-
bers. However, an accidental
cause of the fire has not yet
been ruled out as a possibility.
“Our arson investigator, Of-
ficer Daryl Wittenbrink, and
Sgt. Garza will begin interview-
ing more people in the next
couple of days," said the chief.
“The calls are coming in and we
are receiving a lot of coopera-
tion'from the community. Any-
thing we don’t know about they
are letting us know about. So we
are having a good response."
The chief informed the
mayor the city still had not
received any information re-
garding the samples sent to
Austin to test for the presence
of fire accelerants. If fire
accelerants are found, vit
would prove the barracks fire
was a case of arson. Then, the
police would have an arson-
ist to pursue and arrest before
lie or she starts any more fires.
