Football takes area title
Saturday the Owls went to
Kingsville to face their
toughest opponents of the
year, the Mathis Pirates for
the regional Crown. Mathis
Cathe out quick and scored
on the Owls on their first
drive of the game. After
that, the Owls loosened up
and (Scored on an Ernie
Tapia 9 yard run to tie up
the gpme. Both teams then
held each other on the next
few possessions until the
second quarter when the
Owls broke loose for another
Ernie Tapia score. Hondo
then held the Pirates for
three straight downs, and
forced them to kick a field
goal to make the score 14-10
at halftime.
The Owls came out and
scored immediately when
Zach Stein found Derek
Boehle for a 24 yard touch-
down. However, after that
the Owls seemed to fall apart
and ended up losing the
game in a close one: 21-22,
For the game Ernie Tapia led
the Owls in rushing with 167
yards.
Prior to the Mathis game
the Owls faced the Marion
Bulldogs where they won by
a score of 33-21. The Owls
dominated the running game
as they rushed for over 450
yards. Ernie Tapia rushed for
231 yards and Jess Hackebeil
rushed for his career high
137 yards.
The Owls then faced the
Wimberly Texans at Alamo
Heights stadium. The Owls
scored on their opening
drive, and after that the Owls
never looked back. Hondo
dominated the Texans by a
score of 35-14.

'power'ful message

Varsity Football team, and was crowned by the
team captains at halftime of the last home game.
ne Power Team demon-
strated their healthy
strength by crushing full
cans with their bare hands,
tearing phone books in half,
and breaking levels of con-
crete bricks.
“They were encourag-
ing, inspirational, and very
motivating. The best part
was when Michael Wiemers
swung the bat.” said Senior
Tim Leal.

The power member broke all of the bricks with his
forearm.
The Power Team vis-
ited Hondo High School
for a short assembly on
No'v. 2nd. The two mem-
bers talked to the student
body about staying
drug-free and showed
them what their capabili-
ties were without drugs.
Extreme sports at H.H.S.?
Football, baseball, bas-
ketball, and volleyball are
not the only physical sports
that keep H.H.S. students
busy.
Out-of-school activities
span much larger and more
diverse sports. Students are
involved in every thing
from Hermannson’s Dance
and flag football to more ex-
treme activities like
motorcross and skate
boarding.
; Senior Dallas Taylor
participates in motorcross
competitions. He has com-
peted at the Rio Bravos and
Highlands races in Houston
and the Goodtimes race in
Devine. He received sev-
enth in Houston and second
in Devine. "It’s a rush,” said
Dallas, “I started riding in
seventh grade after I saw
motorcross on ESPN.”
Sophomore Mike Drum
skates. You can usually see
him and an assortment of
others skating at lunch or
after school. They do every-
thing from kickflips and
nosestails to falling and roll-
ing. The skaters range
greatly in level. When asked
why he skates, Mike Drum
said, "It’s a lot of fun, and
it’s good exercise.”
Senior Natasha Mayer is a
yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Also senior Sonya Mendoza,
is a black belt in American
Hapkido. Sonya has com-
peted in many different con-
tests, and has won several,
accumulating many medals
and trophies. Mendoza even
competed in coed full contact
sparing. She said, "I got in it
because ever since I was little,
I loved watching Bruce Lee,
and it looked like fun.”
