YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY...HOW DOES fTSTACK UP?
How does our library rate?
Your public library; how does it
really stack up?
Texans support their public libra-
ries to the tune of $1.24 per capita
per year; in California the figure is
$3.89; in Massachusetts it's $4.61.
You might be interested to know
that the Hondo Public Library budget
amounted to $.38 per capita. (Con-
siderably below even the shamefully
low state average.)
National Library Week in Texas
(April 20-26) has set its purpose this
year to call attention tg the value
of libraries in a free society, to note
the essential need for books, maga-
zines and other readi ly available in-
formation in a world where the sum
total of all human knowledge now
Poernar’s report
doubles every seven years.
Hondo Public Library cannot be-
gin to meet the demands of this tech-
nological revolution unless it gets
adequate support from us whom it
serves.
Hondo adults, children, and stu-
dent researchers are losing out when
your public library is not up to stan-
dard. Your concern with soc i e t y's
lasting values is vividly reflected in
the nature and condition of your
own public library. How does it
stack up?
Call the Hondo Public Library and
ask how you can help give your pub-
lic library a level of support worthy
of the name.
Ambulance bill amendment sought
By John Poerner, State Representative, District No. 49
"The rural areas are quite con-
cerned about House Bill 697 by Rep-
resentative Arthur Vance of Harris
County to increase the requirements
on an ambulance vehicle operated in
the State of Texas. These additional
requirements as noted in many of the
newspapers in my district w o u I d
make it prohibited to own and oper-
ate an ambulance service in a rural
area. I have discussed an amend-
ment to this bill with the author and
he is agreeable to exclude counties
with a 50,000 population or less
based on the last Federal Census.
This will provide protection for a
number of years and allow our rural
counties to.double in size before
they are placed under this require-
ment.
"This week I voted for annual ses-
sions because I do not think the
State's "Board of Directors" can ad-
equately take care of the, State's
business once every two years. We
are fortunate to live in a growing
state and we must adjust our state
this
government to keep pace with
growing trend.
"I voted for Representative Bill
Heatly's appropriation bill because it
reflected a conservative spending and
kept the State appropriation within a
balanced budget. The liberal mem-
bers of the House strongly objected
to the bill and will probably present
further argument to the Conference
Committee composed of five members
of the House and five members of the
Senate. I believe that taxpayers are
presently being asked to pay "all
they can" to support our government
at all levels.
"I voted to allow the people of
Texas to vote their convictions on a
Constitutional Amendment to clarify
„the position of "open saloon" that is
now prohibited by the Constitution.
The 49th District, in the Referendum
of May 4, 1968, voted 5,919 to.
5,095 to allow a vote for this Co n -
siitutional Amendment. As your
State Representative, I consider it
my duty to vote with the majority of
the people in my district."

Approximately 20 acres are
planted to these grasses which
will be carefully observed for
use in this area. Green sprang-
letop and sideoats grama are
native grasses but Kleingrass
is introduced from Africa,
All are known to be good

prove profitable to local land-1
owners, when not abused with
heavy grazing, according to

Restore your manners!
Editor, The Anvil Herald
During recent presentations of the junior and senior class
plays at Hondo High School, the audiences have been quite
rude,"
Constant talking and moving in the aisles while the plays
were in progress was very distracting to the audiences as well
as members of the casts. Leaving before the productions were
completed showed a lack of refinement.
On both occasions the actresses and actors were unable to
have a proper curtain call due to the impatience of the audi -
ence to leave the building.
