Walter Steins honored on golden anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Walter J.
'Stein of Rio Medina were
honored with a Mass and
reception for their golden
wedding anniversay on Sun-
day, August 2,1981.
Father Gerald Hubertus
celebrated the Mass of
Thanksgiving in St, Louis
Catholic Church, Caslroville,
at 2 p.m.
A huge basket of yellow
mums with gold foliage was
placed in front of the altar.
Mrs. Mary Catherine Pol-
lok, organist, was joined in
song by her husband, Ray,
and her aunt and unde, Liz
and Alois Morawietz. The
guests were seated by
ushers, Scott Stein, Maury
Stein and Glenn Keller, Jr.,
grandsons of the couple,
while the choir sang
“Yours"
Leading the procession in-
to the church were Mass
servers, Rita and Darryl
Bippert, niece and nephew of
the couple. Next in line were
the couple’s children and]
their families. Then came
Mrs Minnie (Haby) Wend-
land, who was a member of
the original wedding party.
She was escorted to the
front of the church by her
husband, Arnold Wendland.
They were followed by Ml(
and Mrs Stein and Father
Hubertus The entrance
song was “Come, Holy
Ghost".
The readings were by
Julius Stein, the couple’s
son. Alton Stein, brother of
the groom, and Delvin and
Evangeline Bippert, niece
and nephew of the couple,
were Communion ministers.
Special prayers were com-
posed by Sister Helen and
retited by Julius Stein.
The offertory gifts were
offered by the couple, their
granddaughters, Deesa and
Trida Stein, and their great-
granddaughter, Kris Lynne
Keller.
During the Mass, the
choir’s beautiful renditions
included “How Great Thou
Art”, “Our Father” and “O
Lord I Am Not Worthy”.
The recessional hymn was
“On This Day, 0 Beautiful
Mother”.
Mrs. Stein wore an A-line
gown of dark aqua quiana
which was enhanced by a
white orchid with gold rib-
bon. Mr. Stein wore a light
brown suit with an off-white
boutonniere.
Following Mass, approxi-
mately 200 guests enjoyed a
buffet reception in Naegelin
Hall. The serving table was
covered with a beige lace
tablecloth with yellow
underlay. The centerpiece
was an arrangement of yel-
low mums. Kay’S Catering
served sandwiches, dips,
chips, fresh vegetables, iced
tea and coffee. Beer and
punch were also available.
A similar table held the
cakes baked by Mrs. Walter
Etter. The bride’s cake con-
sisted of two hearts iced in
beige and inscribed with the
names, ‘Tessie and Walter”.
Bronze sugarspun roses en-
twined with gold ribbon
completed the decorations
The two hearts were connec-
ted with a gold 50th anni-
versary medallion.
The groom’s cake was a
German chocolate confection
S decorated in the garden
motif with green grass and
garden tools. The table was
centered with a crystal bowl
filled with bubbling fruit
punch.

were children, grandchil-
dren and great-grandchild of
the couple including Mr. and
Mrs. Glenn 0oris Stein)
Keller and son, Terry; Mr.
and Mrs. Glenn Keller, Jr.,
and daughter, Kris Lynne;
Mr. and Mrs. Julius Stein
and sons, Scott and Maury;
and Mr. and Mrs. Walter A.
Stein and daughter, Deesa
and Tricia.
Guests came from Hamp-
ton, Virginia, Harlingen,
Harker Heights, Seguin,
Fort Stockton, Sterling City,
Austin, Hondo, Devine, San
Antonio, Dunlay, Castro-
ville, Mico, LaCoste and Rio
Medina to wish the couple
many more years together.
Walter J. Stein and Tessie
A. Rihn were married in St.
Louis .Church, Castroville,
on July 28,1931, with Father
C. Haas officiating at the
ceremony. Their wedding
party included Richard
Stein, Julius Rihn, Mrs. Al-
len (Marie Burell) Langfeld
(all now deceased); and Mrs.
Arnold (Minnie Haby)
Wendland who joined in the
50th anniversary celebration
and made it a very special
occasion for the couple, one
they will remember for a
long time to come.

Catherine Ann Reidy,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John G. Reidy, Jr., of San
Antonio, is engaged to
Stephen E. Lutz, son of Mrs.
Clyde Lutz of Hondo and the
late Clyde Lutz.
The brideelect graduated
from Theodore Roosevelt
High School. Her fiance
graduated from D’Hanis
High School and attended
San Antonio College.
The couple plan a Sep-
tember 5 wedding at St.
Thomas More Catholic
Church in San Antonio.

ning names Tuesday for
persons registered in the
Lieberman’s Anniversary
celebration. Mrs. Mertie Lou
Field of Hondo won the first
prize Levi jeans; Suzette

Mr and Mrs. Lloyd
Tschirhart of Castroville,
proudly announce the arrival
of their third son, Clint
Mathew, bom August 2,
1981, at Southwest Metho-
dist Hospital in San Antonio.
The little mister tipped the
scales at 7 pounds, 12 ounces
and measured 20 inches
long.
Also welcoming Clint are
his brothers, Ted and Jody,
and his grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Harley Tschirhart
of Castroville and Mr. and
Mrs. Dan Menk of Hondo.
Great-grandparents are Mr.

Jonathan Lloyd Hardt
Mr. and Mrs. Tim Hardt
announce the birth of their
first child, a son, Jona-
than Lloyd. He was bom at
Southwest Memorial Hospi-
tal in Houston August 1,
1981. He weighed in at 7
pounds, 13 ounces, and was
20'4 inches long.

and Frances Swetlik of Hal-
letsville.
Judges who will choose
the outstanding senior girls
of the community for the
Hondo Junior Miss program
were announced today by
Rosie Aelvoet, Junior Miss
Committee Chairperson.
The local Junior Miss for
1981 will be selected by a
panel of individuals repre-
senting a broad range of
backgrounds and interests.
Judges for the compe-
tition, which will be held
August 29,1981, at 8 p.m. in
the Hondo Activities Center
will be: Mrs. Bill (Linda
Fennell from Seguin, Mrs.
Francis (Dennie) Schmidt
from Devine, Mrs. Curro
(Theresa) Champion from
San Antonio, and the tabula-
tor will be Mrs. William
(Sue) Coates from Castro-
ville.
Mrs. Aelvoet said judging
in the local program will be
based, as it is in state and
the national events, on the
following standards:
Scholastic Achievement -
15 percent - Based on a
careful review of high school
transcripts of grades.
Poise and Appearance -15
percent - This is based on the
appearance of the contestant
in evening gown. Poise,
grace, grooming, good taste,
carriage and posture are
considered.

Youth Fitness - 15 per-
cent - Based on physical well
being, correct posture, car-
riage and grace in sports-
wear. .
Creative and Performing
Arts - 20 percent - Based on
a talent presentation by each
contestant with considera-
tion to originality, technical
ability, appropriateness of
selection and costume, per-
formance and presentation.
Mental Alertness and Jud-
ges’ Conference - 35 percent
- Based on an interview of
each contestant by the jud-
ges. Here the judges look for
a sense of values, clarity of
expression, perception, and
ability m human relations.
The Judges’ conference
will take place at the home of
Mrs. John Meyer on August
29, at 3 p.m Mrs. Meyer will
serve Coke and other re-
freshments to the contes-
tants while they wait for
their interview with the
judges.
The Hondo Chamber of
Commerce is encouraging
everyone to attend the pag
eant and make this first
year’s effort a great success.

Hondo will be the scene of a
Get-Acquainted Tea for con-
testants in the Medina Coun-
ty Fair Queen Contest on
Thursday evening, August
27, beginning at 6:30 p.m
Girls from all over the
county will gather together
to meet each other, to learn
about the contest and the
rewards and responsibilities
involved in being a Fair
Budget hearing set for school district
Lloyd Hardt, president of
the Hondo School District
Board of Trustees, has set an
August 25 public hearing on
the District's proposed
$3,627,500 budget for the-
1981-82 school year.
This is an increase of
approximately $368,753 over
last year’s budget of
$3,258,748 The proposed
budget includes an increase
in local expenditures for
teacher salaries and mainte-
nance and operation
Hondo School Superinten-
dent Newell Woolls, said the
proposed budget would re-
quire an estimated tax in-
crease of $.08 per $100
valuation Debt service
would require $.05 with $.03
for increased costs The pre-
sent tax rate is $ 70 per $100
valuation.

has grand opening
The Snoopy painting on
the window at 1105'^ 17th
Street, Hondo, draws atten-
tion to Kid’s Komer, a new
children’s clothing store fea-
turing girls’ and boys’
clothing in sizes 4 to 14.
The store had its grand
opening Thursday, August
6, and held a drawing on
August 13 for a gift certi-
ficate celebrating the grand
opening. Winner of the certi-
ficate was Alice Trinidad of
Hondo.
Kid’s Korner owners,
Diane Gordon and "Evagene
Schweers, promise to handle
quality merchandise at
reasonable prices, and they
look forward to expanding
their store to better serve
