Pearsall - Defense and special
teams carried the Hondo Owls in a
big way Friday night, in a 34-0 crush-
ing of the Pearsall Mavericks.
The defense scored a touchdown,
sacked the quarterback six times, and
held the Mavericks to just three first
downs and 53 total yards.
Hondo’s punt return team also
scored a touchdown, and accounted
for 124 return yards.
It was easily enough to compen-
sate for an offense, that, despite rack-
ing up 292 yards, sputtered with six
fumbles, losing two of those, and al-
lowed three sacks.
The District 28-AAA victory takes
the Owls to 2-0 in league play, 4-1 on
the season. Hondo will return home
to Barry Field this Friday, for a 7:30
p.m. game against Carrizo Springs (0-
2,0-5). The game will be aired live on
KCWM.AM 1460, beginning at 7:15.
“Our defense and punt return team
were outstanding. That was obvi-
ous,” said Hondo coach Jack Rush-
ing. “But we still had five penalties
and a bunch of fumbles We still have
a lot of things to work on.”
One of those two lost fumbles came
on the opening kickoff. Pearsall cov-
ered the loose ball at the Hondo 37,
and began driving, picking up a pair
of first downs, including one at the 11
after a 15-yard run by Clarence Reed.
On 3rd-and-5, quarterback Ernie Rod-
rigu z rolled left, and was met for a
five-yard loss by Joel Gonzales, Blake
Halbardier and Bryan Jones. Lining up
for an obvious fake field goal attempt
(Pearsall’s placekicker. Matt Saenz,
was aligned at wingback), the Macs
snapped to Matt Mendenhall, who
threw to Saenz. Zach Stein tackled him
at the 3, stopping the drive. That
completion was Pearsall's only one of
the night. The Mavericks had already
collected two of their three first downs,
and they would never get any closer
to the Hondo goalline than their own
48-yard line the rest of the night.
The Owls, however, were just get-
ting started Twelve plays later, Hon-
do put the finishing touches on a 97-
yard drive w ith a one-yard mn by Ernie
Tapia. The whole march was on the
ground, with the exception of one in-
complete pass. Tapia got the bulk of
the carnes, on his way to a 122-yard
night, but Trey Bader and Nick Finger
each had a 19-yard mn on the drive.
That drive was the game's big
momentum turner," Coach Rushing
said “We put a stop to their threat
and turned around and went 97 yards
It set the tone for the evening."
Quarterback sacks stopped the next
two drives (Danny Fernandez for
Hondo; Sonny Hernandez for Pear-
sall), forcing punts The Mavericks
were again unable to move and had
to punt early in the second quarter.
Derek Boehle fielded ihe short kick
at the Pearsall 49, dodged a pair of
defenders and headed to the left side
line. He was hit twice and knocked
off balance, but regained his footing
to run diagonally the rest of the dis-
tance to the right pylon for the touch-
down. A two-point try, in an effort to
regain the missed point after the first
score, was no good, leaving the score
at 12-0 w ith 10:05 left in the half
After Pearsall picked up its final
first down, a sack by Josh Decker
forced another punt
The Owls' drive also appeared to
stall, but back-to-back penalties on
Pearsall erased Hondo's 4th-and-20.
and turned a punting situation into a
first dow n. The Owls got as close as
the 12. but the ball came loose and
Pearsall recovered to stop the drive
with 17 seconds left in the half.
Hondo got the better of a punt ex-
change after halftime, when Boehle
boomed one 63 yards to the Pearsall
7. On third down, Gonzales sacked
Rodriguez at the goalline. As the hit
was made, the bull popped loose in the
endzone, w here Bryan Jones picked it
up for a Hondo TD. It was Jones' sec-
ond defensive score in as many weeks.

Wildcats winless, but plenty scary

Something is drastically wrong
with this picture.
Here we are, at the midway point
of the football season, and Carrizo
Springs, a school which has made the
playoffs 14 of the last 17 seasons, is
still looking for its first win.
The Wildcats come to Barry Field
on Friday to face the Hondo Owls.
“They’re so much better than their
record indicates,” Hondo coach Jack
Rushing said. “They moved the ball
well against Devine last week (in a
34-14 loss), and were driving for the
tying score just before the half. De-
vine intercepted and brought it back
90 yards, and suddenly you have a
14-point swing. Instead of 21-21,
Devine’s ahead 28-14. Carrizo played
Devine tough, and Devine's 5-0.
“Carrizo is plenty scary.”

Tate, now in his 21st year at the helm,

headed by junior quarterback Lee
Hernandez, who passed for 162
yards last week against Devine.

tion are senior fullback Jerry Munoz

Owls struggle, keep pace in district

Hondo did things the hard way in
both of its District 28-AAA volley-
ball matches during the past week.
Bottom line, however: the Owls
won both matches.
Friday, Hondo came back from a
game down to defeat Pearsall, 5-15,
15-7, 15-11. On Tuesday, they made
it look even tougher, snatching de-
feat from the jawsf of victory in the
opener, before coming back to crush
Somerset, 14-16, 15-6, 15-3.
"1 don’t think we’re trying to em-
barrass ourselves, but we’re doing a
good job of it in the opening games,”
said Hondo coach Deesa Griggs.
“We’ve been settling down and play-
ing solidly to win the matches, but we
need to start coming out ready to play.”
Also during the past week, Devine
and Lytle won both.of their matches
to keep pace in first arid third places
in the district race.

No place like Dome
What a day it was.
Never mind the long drive there and back, never mind that it
cut into work time for the week. This trip was worth it.
The Houston Astros played
their last regular season game
in the Astrodome last Sunday.
Tracy and I were there, along
w ith my folks. And even
though all we could get were
four single tickets back in
June, we were still in. And. keeping in mind that it’s an Astros
game, there were enough empty seats that we could find a way
to sit in pairs.
So the Astros are getting ready to move to sparkly new Enron
Field, and what do they do but save the clinching of the National
League Central Division until the final day of the season-which
of course, they did, by beating the Dodgers, 9-4.
The Astros and fans, of course, relished that moment, w ith the
traditional dogpile in the infield to celebrate the division title, the
champagne drenchings, the victory lap, including one with Craig
Biggio and Mike Hampton on a motorcycle.
The trivia-Ken Caminiti hit the last homer; Mike Hampton got
the last win; LA’s Mark Grudzielanek got the last hit; Jay Powell
threw the last pitch, Raul Mondesi made the last out; Charley
Pride sang the last national anthem; I ate the last Domedog.
These, of course, are all regular season lasts. The Astros will
bring that I -1 mark back to the Dome on Friday to finish off the
Braves. Or lather. TO FINISH OFF THE BRAVES!!! In 4.
But after the game, the club brought back most of its all-time
greats—Bob Aspromonte, Roger Metzger, Johnny Edwards. Bob
Watson, Glenn Davis, Bill Doran, Bob Knepper, Ken Forsch, Joe
Sambito, Terry Puhl, Denny Walling, and, of course, reliever
extraordinaire Fred Gladding, his Coke-boute glasses and .015
lifetime batting average. Most were there, except for Joe Morgan
and Art Howe.
Then they introduced the All-Time Houston Astros Starting
Lineup: Manager Bill Virdon; starting pitchers Mike Scott, J.R.
Richard, Larry Dierker, Joe Niekro and Nolan Ryan; relief
pitchers Dave Smith and Billy Wagner; outfielders Jimmy Wynn,
Cesar Cedeho and Jose Cruuuuuuuuz; third baseman Doug
Rader; shortstop Craig Reynolds; second baseman Craig Biggio;
and first baseman Jeff Bagwell.
But after they’d brought out Willie Nelson to sing, among
other stuff, “Turn Out the Lights," reality began to set in. This
was it. The last chance to visit the Dome for an Astros game,
which, in my growing up years, was always a once or twice a
summer family ritual.
It seemed so final.
But as we were headed up the stairs, 1 glanced back at the
DiamondVision screen, and there it was. Just what had been
missing; the Scoreboard Spectacular.
Tears welled up.
It wasn't as grandiose as when the exploding scoreboard
covered the entire east wall of the Dome, but it worked. The
baseball flying out of the Dome roof, cowboys firing off their
guns, the stampeding cattle, the brief strains of "The Eyes of
Texas,” followed by fireworks. It all made me realize that they
wouldn’t have put that on the relatively small screen, if they
weren’t planning to bring the old scoreboard back to Enron Field.
That, too, will quickly become home.
