Do You Really Get
A Bargain?
When vour neighbor drives up in that expensive new
car and tells you he £ot a “steal” out of town, have you
ever thought what that car cost you? Yes, we are always
pleased to see someone make a pood deal, hut when some-
one buys a car, appliance, or any “bargain" item from an
out-of-town store, we all lose a little.
How do wo figure this’ Well, who pays the lion’s
share of taxes in our community after the oil industry and
utility companies? — it is your local merchants, of
course. The nice store, air-conditioned for your com-
lorl, the parking area, all add up in taxable improvements.
These taxes pay for your schools, your city and your
county governments.
livery dollar which is given to a merchant in another
area has a part which ends up paying the taxes in that
area. If enough money is spent in that area, it is con-
ceivable that they might even get a tax cut — a rare
thing today. Ilut what about the folks back home?
When our people trade away from home and their
dollars leave this area never to return, our business com-
munity cannot improve. Buildings and equipment depre-
ciate and this downward trend shows up on the ta c rolls.
Then who must make up tne difference? Why is there re-
evaluation of taxable property? Because values change.
11 our people are spendutg money away from home, they
change for the worse. If a merchant is successful and adds
to or improves his business, the tax valuation rises.
So when you go shopping in the city, think — did you
look at home tiistAre you really saving that 81.‘AS when
you drove sixty or more miles one way to shop? What il
your purchase requires maintenance? Can you call on
.good old Joe to send his men out to service your new ap-
pliance, even though you didn’t trade with him originally?
Will he still be in business hue?
If you have be r ill-treated in a store, did you tell the
manager? If you find ; rices out of line, have you written
the company and tod them where the price was more
reasonable (for the same brand or manufacturer’s num-
bered item) ?
Many times one finds a cheaper article but it is not
the saint quality. When you compare price, be sure you
are comparing comparable items. If si/e or color or other
facts make shopping in Heeville impossible, then you have
an excuse to order elsewhere, but give yourself and your
neighbors.a break and try to find vour needs in Heeville
first. If we did. quantity Inlying could lower prices!

Carter pointed out that
cities of more than 5, >m
