Remembering what drouths can do, I'm not
complaining but this city has had rain every day
of this new year, including today (Jan. 10). All
this without Dr. OBT to tell us when to wear out
raincoats, but I'll bet he could have.
Winter is finally moving in and I'm already
looking forward to spring. Our closeness to the
Bay gives us an extra 3 or 4 degrees of warmth
over the "inland" area. Sort of a fringe benefit.
So, the McDade crops have fared very well
without getting involved in the farm controversy
program. The last of the Kentucky Wonders were
harvested this week. And the Jalapeno peppers
have made things hot for the whole neighborhood.

A letter from WARD (Mrs. Paul) POPE tells me
that the BOB (Susan) McGARITYs have‘T>efe<! ele-
vated To grandparental status. Welcome to BRIAN
TRAVIS WILCOX who also has kinsfolk in Corpus
Christi.
If Grandfather McG ever wears a hat, chances
are his next one will have to be a size or two
larger.

While on the subject of the stOrk realities of
life, a note to myself reminds me that I failed to
welcome DANIEL CARL REINHARD who discov-
ered Goliad, Texas, Nov . 9 of last year. In less
than about 20J3/4 years, he will be 21 years old!
He is the. No. 2 grandson of DAN and EVELYN
HERRMANN of D'Hanis.
Daniel's Big Brother, STEVEN, was bom :n
Germany where his parents, STAN and ELAINE
(Herrmann) REINHARD spent a few years, courte-
sy of Uncle Sam.

. Solemnity prevailed in the page one line-up ,
■of elected county officials as they posed for their.
"I do" ceremony . .County Attorney Allen Lee,
youngest in the group of pioneers, can now boast -
■ of having the most hair. However, the others pan
assure him that, with time, that, too will pass.
Missing from the group were the familiar fapes
of my Mends JEROME DECKER, FRANCES BOHL,
M ICKY MECHLER and HENRY SCHULTE who
"must wait until after their next election to "Look
handsome, please" for the photographer.

Sooner or later most of us have to admit that
forgetting the "now" things and remembering those
of long ago sort of sets in before we know it.
On sleepless nights, I play with words instead i
of counting sheep as recommended. Recently
while so engaged-, my mind backtracked to this:
"His cogitative faculties immersed in cogibundity
of cogi tation" . i
Shades of high school English assignments!
Suddenly, I was back in class in ojd Laredo High
when our homework required a 3-page report on
any English writer of the 1‘7th century. I dug
through the encyclopedia and came up with Henry
Carey (l661 -1743) who wasactually half-way be-
tween centuries but eligible.
I fell in love with hirrvwhen I learned that he
had characterized his "Chrononhotonthologos" as
"the most tragical tragedy that was ever trage-
di zed".
Of course I didn't remember all thi s - just the
tongue-twister quotation. But some after-midnight
research reclaimed for me this now useless infor-
mation.-
Just shows what high school E'nglish can do for
one some 60 years later! (Helps you go to sleep.)

The rising price of beef is causing complaints
here as elsewhere. I like this story about what -
Edgar Bergq^i's Charley McCarthy said when he
wa? asked what Tie fought about the high cost of
living.
"Nof much," he was quoted as saying, "but
however high it goes, I want to keep on doing it!"
