What does it mean to be a woman in Corpus Christi?
Sunday's Caller-Times gave 17 assorted definitions and
here’s one: *. . finding a green liaard slithering up
your refrigerator."
But the only American chameleon (Anolis
carolinensis) I've found indoors so far was on a day in
late June when I was unpacking several boxes marked
"Kitchen" and had left an unscreened door open.
Lots of the friendly little busy bodies scurry around
the outside walls and fence and often stop for g visit in
patio weather. I never tire of watching them. Their color
changes from pale to brilliant green, a rich deep brown,
.lovely golden yellow, or a dull grey with white dots.
The male carries a peculiar throat pouch (dewlap) in
varying shades of. pink, registering that gentleman’s
mixed emotions. •
It gets attention! "
One of the delightful advantages ol living along the
bay fr "Jt is the con* tnlly changing exhibit of nautical
scenes ii presents, free for the appreciative looking.
One such comes into full view on days when the
sailboats are out. 1 am adding sea-going terms to my
landlubber vocabulary. "Spinnaker" is one.
A sail is still a sail but the larger parachute-like sails
are know.n as spinnakers Many are the traditional white
but in growing popularity are brightly colored ones
made of nylon or dacron. Cost of these runs from about
$200 (as used on a 20 ft. boat) to $1000 for a 45-footer.
A large boat entered in long ocean races might require
as many ten. to follow the ways'of the w inds.
Better check the bank balance before ordering too
many.
Along with the peace-war headlines, the battle of the
Budget vs. HCL finds adequate space on page one.

Kind what consolation you can in comparing the
week s prices at your favorite food store with these
quotations from PANGNTRTUNG. N.W.T.
Bread $1.25 loaf, eggs $1.65 do/ : potatoes 30 cents
lb.. and so on-and-on-and-on.
But then, who wants to live on a .Baffin Bay
settlement in Canada's Northwest Territories?
MARGARET (Mrs Kilmer) HAEGELlN's picture
greeted me from a page the 1 15jamming paper And,
L* submit that one picture is not at^avs worth the
traditional thousand or more words I'd have preferred a

Margaret was here attending the spring convention of

Properly identified in,the morning news, she appeared
unde man alias as Mrs HOMER Haegelin bv afternoon
Also, she is now District ATI parliamentarian
I rise to a question of privilege and congratulate
her and may her interpretation of the accepted Rules of
Order never be challenged!

The slogan so apt. in days gone by", as applied to
Letter Carrier ELGIN W 1FMFRS (whose ever-present
smile, would identify him anywhere) sent me to my
BARTLETT s Familiar Q-book because it didn't sound
quite right.
For the record, here is what the inscription on the
Main Post Office. New York City says: "Not snow, nor '
rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers
from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
And it was Herodotus (4H4-424 B.C.) who attributed
some of the same dependable characteristics to the
Persian messengers of long ago.
Goodness only knows what they might havy done in a
tumble-weeded Texas duststorm but I'd bet an
uncancelled 1-cent postage stamp that ELGIN would
find a way t o .get the job done! , '
