Toby Schulte
Timothy Schulte
Schulte twins graduate with honors
Tobin Lloyd (Toby) and Timothy
James (TJ) Schulte graduated from
Grand Island, (NE) Senior High
School on May 16, 1999. Both
graduated with honors and were
ranked in the top 5 % of the class of
410.
Toby was vice president of the stu-
dent council his senior year. TJ was
chairperson of the Youth Coalition
Against Alcohol and Drug Use and
was successful in obtaining the pass-
ing of a city ordinance regarding al-
cohol and drugs. Toby and TJ let-
tered in soccer all four years. Both
have been active in the Big Brothers
and Big Sisters program.
TJ will be attending Colorado
School of Mines majoring in me-
chanical engineering and Toby will
attend Baylor University majoring in
bio-sciences.
Toby and TJ are the twin sons of
Gary and Stephanie Schulte of Grand
Island, NE.
Grandparents are Jim and Dorothy
Schulte of Amarillo. Great-grand-
parents are Andrew and Elsa
Schweers and the late Edwin and
Anna Schulte of Hondo.

GERMAN HERITAGE... D’Hanis Texas History students Staci Rothe, Amy Lutz and Joseph Zerr invited
Mrs. Minnie Schlortt of Knippa to speak German to the class. She told of her German ancestry and of early
German settlers who came to Texas. Students prepared sauerkraut and sausage and homemade bread.

University has named its honor stu-
dents for the 1999 spring semester,
recognizing several thousand stu-
dents for outstanding academic per-
formance.
The Dean's Honor Roll recognizes
students taking at least 15 semester
hours who have maintained at least
a 3.75 grade point ratio (GPR) out
of a possible 4.0 during the most re-
cent grading period.
A second designation, “Distin-
guished Student,” recognizes stu-
dents who earned a 3.25 to 3.75 GPR
while taking at least 15 hours.
Among those recognized in the
“Distinguished Student" category
were: Stacey Lee Gilliam of Hondo.
Senior - Biomedical Science; and
Shaun Layne Neumann of Hondo,
Junior - Business Administration.
STUDYING POLISH TEXANS.. D’Hanis seventh graders Nick Bernal,
John McCauley and James Cuellar invited Joe Sowa of D’Hanis as
guest speaker as part of their project on Polish Texans. Mr. Sowa told
of his childhood experiences in the early Polish Texas settlement of
Kosciusko and the oldest Polish settlement in Texas, Panna Maria.
He spoke the Polish language and told how he had to learn Polish in
grade school to survive the tough Polish playground. His wife, Anne,
baked a delicious Polish sweetbread, Babka, for the class.

4H Club won 1st at the State
Round-Up at Texas A&M Univer-
sity in College Station last week.
Michael did an illustrated talk
and demonstration in the field of
Entomology on Horticulture
Organic Gardening. Michael is
vice president of his local 4H
Club in D’Hanis and serves as
the vice president of the Medina
County 4HCouncil. He is the son
of Louis and Susie Rothe and
the grandson of Ferd and Elsie
Rothe of Medina County and
Elvera Swetlick of Nueces
County.
SWTJC names Dean’s Honor Roll
Gloria A. Rivera, Southwest Texas
Junior College dean of instructional
services, has announced the names of
257 students who have been named
to the Dean’s Honor Roll during the
1999 SWTJC spring semester.
According to Dean Rivera, in or-
der for students to make the honor
roll, they must have taken at least
12 semester hours and achieved a
grade point average of 3.6 or higher
