At State Meet
Carol Jean Powell won first
in piano solo at the state meet
held at Prairie View College last
Saturday.
Booker T. Washington ranked
third in the district Literary
Interscholastic meet held at
Bastrop recently when they
placed first in two events.
Winning first place in piano
solo was Carol Jean Powell and
in sub-junior spelling Helen
Gray and Ida Calton.
Second place winners were:
senior declaiming Miguel Trejo;
mixed octette Mary Helen
Smith Carol Jean Powell
Yvonne Goode Mary Ann Hub-
bard Joyce Anderson Lois Ter-
rell D. L. Jones and Willard
James.
Third place winners were:
Junior spelling Mary Nell Jones
Willie B. Marshall; arithmetic
Lois Terrell; and essay writing
Carol Jean Powell.
WMU Meets At
Baptist Church
The W. M. U. of the Baptist
Church met at the church Wed-
nesday April 17th.
Mrs. T. L. White was in
charge of the business meeting.
At this time plans were made to
entertain the high school sen-
iors. -
Mrs. Cecil Harris program
chairman presented a program
on mission work in the Philip-
pines. Mrs Roy Stockton gave the
prayer calendar and Miss Pearl
Joiner led in prayer. Others tak-
ing part on the program were

this week "I have been well
pleased with the showing the
boys have made. They have
been putting forth plenty of
extra effort. We are working
hard for the state mget which is
a little over a week away. We
know the competition there will
be the best."

Track lettermen for Bartlett
High School were announced
this week by Coach James
Crews
They are as follows: seniors.
Butch (Ramsey Larry Miller and
Adrian Moore; juniors Carol
Kauitzsch Phil Lindsay Gar-
land Wentrcek and Tommy Law-
ton; soph. Chris Clearman; and
freshmen Donny Schwertner
Bobby Haynes and Ricky Brock.
To qualify for a letter a stu-
dent must place in one of the
six places at the district meet.
Other boys participating were
Scotty Holt Larry Grigsby and
Gary Steglich. Harold Jones is
the manager.

The U. S. Denartment of Ag
riculture has selected local crin-
ner Hans Nelson to represent
cotton ginners at the Interna
tional Standards Conference to
be held in Washington May 2-3.
