MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER
__ LIVINGSTON .i...
Martins Welcome to Visit Hospital Garden
Visitors of the winged vari-
ety can now be accommodated
in Memorial Medical Center-
Livingston's Healing Garden -
just as long as they gobble their
share of buzzing pests.
"A purple martin can eat up
to 2,000 mosquitoes and other
flying insects a day;" said A.H.
"Shep" Green. Green, who
helped build and then donate a
12-unit purple martin "condo"
birdhouse to the hospital, is
former president of the Polk
County Bird and Bloom society.
The Healing Garden is a
landscaped spot located just be-
hind the hospital, where human
visitors can spend a contempla-
tive moment or seek a quiet re-
treat. The birdhouse will serve
to attract birds to the spot, which
then can help keep insects un-
der control.
"They should be coming
back up here about now," Green
said of the migratory martins,
which have ranged as far south
as the Amazon River in South.
America during the winter.
"They only eat bugs on the wing,
so they're not going to go to
where the food isn’t." The birds
will fly as far north as Canada,
so long as they can Find insects
to eat, he added.
Martins average about 7
inches from tail to beak and
weigh less than a pound. The
purple variety doesn't eat ben-
eficial insects such as bees, but
is quite happy consuming the
annoying types of flying bugs,
such as mosquitoes and flies.
They are thus a safe and organic
method of pest control that will
add to the attractiveness of the
garden.
